Make the connections between them to SEE the bigger picture (the meta). Then take 'nodes' of that larger map and break them out to fill in the details.
Large connections for large topics
Smaller, detailed connections for subtopics
Good for making memes & infographs
Remember "Expand Your Thinking"? That was a BOOK about doing all that mentioned above: taking large amounts of data and putting them together graphically to simplify the presentation and convey a lot in one image/map…
I agree we might need meta right now to be able to refocus on the big picture (the forest).
