As a caver who has spent many many hours underground, there are areas to dump internally, if they are boring deep. They'll hit cavities, lakes, and air pockets bigger than a football stadium.
And if their tunnels are for a transport system, even easier to take tailings from one spot to another to dispose.
So I would not consider "no above ground proof" as proof.
