Officials have launched a federal probe into the rise of robberies at gunpoint targeting U.S. postal workers in New Mexico.

A growing number of incidents are being seen in the city of Albuquerque, with eight cases since mid-October. Postal inspectors said they’re doing everything they can to protect employees, including offering rewards for arrests reaching up to $50 thousand.

The public has been asked to keep an eye out and call 911 if they see anything.

“Our letter carriers are out every day, rain or shine, delivering to every address in the United States,” U.S. Postal Inspector Brook Robinson said. “We want to make sure the mail gets delivered and they are safe.”

Just last week, a 31-year-old woman was charged in connection with at least one of the incidents. The suspect, Cecilia Ann Gillespie, reportedly robbed a mail delivery person at gunpoint, taking mail keys and several pieces of mail.

However, for the remainder of crimes, authorities are still investigating.

One person is in custody after three people including a deputy with the Loudon County Sheriff's Office were shot Saturday afternoon at a northern Virginia Walmart.

A statement from the sheriff's office indicated that no one was killed in the incident that occurred at the Dulles Crossing Plaza after a customer was confronted by two loss-prevention officers while attempting to leave the store.

No others were injured besides the deputy and two store security employees, who all suffered "serious but non-life-threatening injuries" according to police.

"He ended up striking the loss-prevention officers one time in each of their legs as far as we know," Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman told reporters, according to NBC News. "One of our two deputies was shot and struck several times."

Walmart representatives did not immediately return a request for comment.

In their statement, Loudon County police added that the suspect was injured by police gunfire while escaping the scene in a stolen vehicle and apprehended after crashing some distance down the road.
