Gunman disguised as delivery driver kills son, shoots husband of NJ federal judge

The 20-year-old son of a prominent New Jersey federal judge was shot dead and her husband was critically injured in an attack at their home Sunday evening, according to reports.

An unknown assailant disguised as a Federal Express delivery driver gunned down Judge Esther Salas’ 20-year-old son, Daniel Anderl, and shot her 63-year-old husband, Mark Anderl, at the North Brunswick home around 5 p.m., authorities told the New Jersey Globe.

Salas — who is believed to have been in the basement of the home at the time of the attack — was not injured.

Sources told ABC News that the judge’s son, a student at Catholic University in Washington, DC, answered the door and was immediately struck.

“He was shot through the heart,” North Brunswick Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack told the outlet.

Four UN Employees Safe After Deadly Attack on Convoy in DRC That Killed Italian Ambassador

UNITED NATIONS, (Sputnik) - The World Food Program (WFP) said in a statement on Tuesday that four of its staff members that survived the attack in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in which three people were killed, including the Italian Ambassador, are safe.

On Monday, two UN vehicles carrying seven people to a WFP school feeding program in the east of the DRC were attacked by an armed group. Luca Attanasio, the Italian Ambassador to the DRC, and two other members of the delegation were killed in the incident.

"The four other passengers in the group - all WFP staff – are safe and accounted for," the WFP said. "They include WFP Deputy Country Director in DRC, Rocco Leone, WFP School Feeding Program Assistant, Fidele Zabandora, WFP Security Officer, Mansour Rwagaza, and WFP Driver, Claude Mukata."

US Security Officials Blame Intelligence for Failure to Prepare for Capitol Assault

WASHINGTON, (Sputnik) - US security officials told a Senate panel on Tuesday that an assault on the Capitol caught them off guard as there was no intelligence to predict it and all preparations were made for a different scenario.

Active and retired officials claimed in their testimonies that they expected the January 6 protests to be similar to two previous MAGA rallies that brought to Washington, DC, “tens thousands” of President Donald Trump’s supporters and resulted in sporadic altercations with their ideological opponents, but not attacks on government institutions or police.

“We properly planned for a mass demonstration with possible violence. What we got was a military-style coordinated assault on my officers and a violent takeover of the Capitol building,” former US Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund said.

US drug agents: Drug seizures surged in Nebraska in 2020

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The seizure of illegal drugs in Nebraska surged last year, according to federal drug agents for the state, and officials warned that methamphetamine and the powerful painkiller fentanyl remained dangerous threats in the state.

Authorities in Nebraska seized 421 pounds (191 kilograms) of meth last year - a jump of 68% from the year before, the Omaha field division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said Tuesday in a news release. Officials also seized 4,644 pounds (2,106.5 kilograms) of marijuana, six times the amount seized the year prior.

The meth and marijuana seizures for 2020 combined had an estimated street value of $13.3 million, the agency said.

McCoy steps down as South Carolina's US attorney

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina’s top federal prosecutor says he will resign at the end of the month.

U.S. Attorney Peter McCoy submitted his resignation letter to President Joe Biden Monday.

McCoy, a former state lawmaker, took on the job last spring after being nominated by former President Donald Trump in February 2020.

During his tenure, McCoy prosecuted both civil and criminal cases, as well as investigating coronavirus fraud schemes, hoarding, and price gouging activities, according to a statement from his office.

“Pandemic or not, there was no safe harbor in South Carolina for those who violated federal law on my watch,” McCoy said in a statement.

In the role, he supervised an office of about 60 prosecutors and nearly 100 other staff.
