Rebecca Matthews and her husband, the owners of Corduroy Restaurant in Kitsilano, consider their upscale woodsy pub to be their first baby, as they worked night and day to bring it to life 13 years ago.
That’s why, when Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced new authoritarian restrictions that would negatively impact thousands of businesses, including a ban on indoor dining with no accommodation for restaurants without a patio, Matthews says she knew she was not going to comply.
“If Bonnie’s winery can be open, so can we,” the restaurant said on Instagram, in response to the dumbfounding fact that while restaurants have been slapped with such restrictions, B.C. wineries like Clos du Soleil — which Dr. Henry is a cofounder of — are still permitted to offer indoor wine tastings. Talk about salt in the wound.
I visited Corduroy Restaurant during their first day open against public health orders, to report to you on the citizens who came to support the family-owned business. I also interviewed Rebecca about why her family is taking this stand, and of course, ate some delicious hot wings and Brussels sprouts too.
Since my visit to Corduroy, Rebecca has informed me that she was served with a notice of closure from Vancouver Coastal Health. Although, the notice has not deterred her from fighting to save her business. Corduroy has received so much support that they ran out of food, and are closing for two days.

Public Health Agency seeks COVID advisor — until March 2023!
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has posted a hiring notice for a COVID-19 public health expert, with the term of employment possibly extending to March of 2023.
The notice was posted earlier today on the Trudeau government's procurement website.
According to the request for proposal, the contract is set to run until the end of March 2022, with the “option to extend the contract” by another full year.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) Immunization Programs and Pandemic Preparedness Division requires the services of a public health expert, with extensive public health, infectious disease, outbreak management, emergency (including pandemic) preparedness and response experience, to help meet the immediate and forecasted needs for pandemic guidance for the federal, provincial and territorial responses to COVID-19. Furthermore, the contractor needs to have extensive knowledge of the Canadian Public Health System and Emergency Preparedness planning.
The period of the contract will be from the date of contract award to March 31, 2022 with the irrevocable option to extend the contract by one additional one-year period under the same conditions.

CBC spends $900,000 on five person “strategic intelligence” department
The CBC uses its $1.2 billion federal grant to fund a bloated bureaucracy, including a $900,000 “strategic intelligence department.”
According to records obtained by Blacklock’s Reporter, the CBC was found to have a large number of senior staff, including seven vice-presidents, ten director generals and five directors of finance.
“Each of these departments brought together a certain number of employees, more than a hundred in total for the finance and strategic planning department” wrote federal arbitrator Pierre-Georges Roy.
The CBC’s “strategic intelligence department” consisted of one manager and four employees, with almost all of the department’s $900,000 budget going towards salaries.
“It developed its strategic intelligence sector in order to be better informed of the various trends and realities of the telecommunications sector, thus enabling it to be more informed,” wrote Roy.
The president of CBC receives a salary between $390,300-$459,100, with vice-presidents earning between $250,000-$417,500.
The CBC, which receives most of its funding from the taxpayer, engages with very few Canadians. In 2019, only 0.8% of Canadians tuned in to watch CBC news’ evening broadcasts.
In recent years, the CBC’s ad revenue has also declined significantly, dropping 19% in the first six months of 2020 alone.
Last year, CBC president Catherine Tait received a raise of approximately $20,000, bringing her salary to a maximum of $459,100.
In a previous statement to the House of Commons heritage committee, Tait believed the CBC needed additional funding, as the decline in revenue seen under her tenure caused the organization significant stress.
“We had ongoing financial pressures at CBC because we are not indexed to inflation on goods and services. We’re constantly working under that kind of pressure, just to give you the context,” she said.

Tucker Carlson isn’t the only one speaking out about Trudeau’s internment camps
“What if your next door neighbour suddenly went dangerously insane and starting holding people hostage in his house?” Asked Tucker Carlson during his evening show on Wednesday — the most-watched political show on television.
He was talking about boring old us, Canada, and how under the leadership of Justin Trudeau, “Canada took a dramatic move toward legitimately dangerous authoritarianism.”
He was referring to an order released by Trudeau on Monday, outlining the latest bit of Martial Law being imposed on Canadians.
“Now is not the time to travel. If you have plans to head somewhere for the long weekend, cancel them,” Trudeau instructed.
“For those who need to travel, take note of the measures that are in place when you return to Canada: If you’re flying back into the country, you’ll need to show a negative PCR test result before you board the plane. When you land, you’ll need to take another PCR test. You’ll then have to wait at an approved hotel, and at your own expense, for your results to come back.”
“Approved hotel” it seems, is the latest Trudeau-euphemism for what Carlson more accurately describes as “internment camps.”
Internment camps where YOU pay the bill.
Trudeau continues: “If your results come back negative for COVID-19, you’ll be able to head home and finish your mandatory quarantine there. If your test results come back positive, you’ll need to immediately quarantine in designated government facilities. This is not optional.”
A non-optional stay at a government facility… that sounds a lot like an internment camp. Reaction on Twitter went even darker, where high profile comedians and athletes compared the “hotels” to gulags and concentration camps.
Fortunately for Trudeau, he has his own propaganda machine to cover for his attacks on our rights and freedoms.
Back in October, the CBC assured Canadians that any talk of “internment camps” was false.
“Disinformation campaign falsely suggests Canadians will be forcibly sent to quarantine sites,” read a CBC headline.
According to the fact-checkers over at the state broadcaster, who quote an unnamed Liberal spin doctor to substantiate their report, the feds were merely providing “voluntary quarantine sites” — only to be used by homeless people and international travellers with nowhere else to go.
Voluntary, eh?
The CBC story was not updated or corrected on Monday when Trudeau contradicted their report by informing Canadians that forced stays at these quarantine sites was “not optional.”
“Suddenly Canada is a flagrant violator of the most basic human rights. Fail a covid test and they will lock up without trial,” said Tucker Carlson.
Why does it take the host of an American cable news show to say what Canadian journalists and activists should be filling newspapers and airways condemning?
Canada’s pundit class is too busy ho-humming about a possible spring election to notice or care about the usurping of Habeas corpus.
Fortunately for Canadians, not everyone is burying their head in the sand. I spoke to the lawyers at the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF), who outlined the many ways that Trudeau’s orders are in fact unconstitutional, and how they are fighting back.
JCCF President John Carpay explained that this order could violate Section 7 of the Charter — the right to life, liberty and security of person.
Carpay explained that a government locking people up against their will, with no due process, no presumption of innocence and an absence of a timely trial before an independent and impartial court, were all red flags.
He told me that his organization was fighting back, and initiating “court action against these hotel-prisons.”
Jay Cameron, one of the JCCF lawyers on that case, called this “the essence of authoritarianism” and expressed concern that “Parliament has not considered or voted on the forced internment of Canadians.”
Likewise, Sayed Hassan, the other JCCF lawyer on the case, pointed out that the location of these forced quarantine hotels is unknown.
“There should be no room in a free and democratic society for secret federal facilities,” he said.

Chris Sky lands on Canada's No-Fly List
Recently, Chris Sky, the Toronto anti-lockdown activist (or “common nuisance” in some circles) went to Pearson International Airport to hop aboard a Flair Airlines flight to Alberta, where he was scheduled to speak at a few rallies.
But it turned out that Sky wouldn’t be flying the friendly skies on that day — or any other day in the future, it would seem. That’s because an airline representative with Flair Airlines informed Sky that he was on Canada’s no-fly list!
Sky was understandably stunned. The no-fly list is meant to prevent terrorists from flying. How could it possibly be that an anti-lockdown activist is included in such a list?
But alas, no answers were forthcoming. We reached out to Public Safety Canada, which is responsible for the no-fly list, also known as the Passenger Protect Program (PPP), but we never received a reply to our queries — which is standard procedure these days.
Had we received a reply, no doubt the ministry would have said that it cannot comment due to “privacy issues.” That’s how the uber-transparent Trudeau Liberals roll these days when it comes to media relations…
Yet, surely the unspoken reason for Sky being on the no-fly list is that he espouses politically incorrect ideas. He questions authority. He asks insensitive questions. And that is apparently verboten in Justin Trudeau’s Canada.
On the flip side, we have a homegrown bona fide terrorist and murderer residing in Canada these days, who goes by the name of Omar Khadr. He’s the delightful scholar who tossed a grenade, killing one U.S. serviceman and partially blinding another. Khadr himself confessed to this odious act, and he is a member of a gross family that despises Canada and its values.
We were led to believe that Khadr was on the no-fly list, but it turns out he isn’t! Last year, we caught him hopping aboard an Air Canada flight to Halifax. (Surely he flew first class, given that taxpayer cheque he received in the sum of $10.5 million for hurt feelings…)
And so it is this is the so-called “new normal” in our great, albeit diminishing, Dominion: an Islamist terrorist guilty of murder can fly anytime and anywhere he wants. A crusader for freedom who merely speaks out against debilitating government lockdowns in the name of the Wuhan virus is deemed to be an enemy of the state.

Pastor Artur: Clergy, business owners must find courage to “Kick those Nazis out”
Pastor Artur Pawlowski, who went viral in clips of driving out Calgary Police and a health inspector as they attempted to interrupt a Christian service last week has spoken up about the interaction in a new interview.
Pawlowski told the Daily Caller that he used harsh language, such as calling the police “Nazis” because he sees a repetition of history in the actions of the police, whom he likened to the communists who governed Poland prior to the fall of the USSR.
“I grew up in Poland under the boot of the Soviets, behind the Iron Curtain,” the pastor said. “What I see right now, I see everything escalating and moving to the new level. They’re acting just like the Communists were acting when I was growing up when the pastors and the priests were arrested, and some were murdered. Many were tortured.”
“That’s why I say what I say,” Pawlowski said. “Because I see a repetition of history.”
He explained that the police and the health inspector had interrupted the Calgary church during service and described the continued harassment of him and his churchgoers as “unacceptable.”
“I asked them to get out, and they would not move,” he stated. “So everything started to intensify. And I raised my voice, and I said it again and again and again, and they just didn’t want to go.”
“Even during the times of the Middle Ages, the knights were commanded to leave their swords outside the church, they were not allowed to enter the church. But these days, nothing is holy for those people. They just walk in like it’s a restaurant,” he said, pointing out that several of them were armed. “What happened on Saturday is just the tipping point of the harassment and intimidation I have been enduring for months.”
“I simply say, enough,” Pawlowski added. “And I want – I hope – that this video that so many people are talking about will give courage to other clergymen and other business owners to kick those Nazis out.”
“From my point of view, I’m not afraid of the disease,” the pastor said of COVID-19. “Because my God is bigger, and I pray for the people that are still sick and that they recover. I don’t live a life of fear, because I have hope.”

Majority of Canadians not using government’s COVID Alert app: study
The Trudeau government’s heavily marketed COVID Alert app is not being used by the majority of Canadians.
Research from York University reveals that the app is having little impact on slowing the spread of COVID-19 because the majority of Canadians did not download the app.
Director of York University’s Digital Global Health and Humanitarianism Lab Researchers Jennie Phillips told CTV News that in order for the app to work, Canadians need to use it but some people have a fear of using these types of apps.
“The perceptions around these risks actually can be bigger or different than the actual risks associated with using this app, so in many cases these perceptions can override any efforts that are taken to minimize the actual risks,” Phillips said.
The app cost the government $480,000 to develop and $16 million for marketing. In previous statements, Trudeau had aimed to have 50% of Canadians download the app.
“We know solid data is the foundation for making the right public policy decisions,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said when announcing the app in June. “This is an approach we are confident is going to make a big difference.”
In a submission to the Senate finance committee earlier this year, the Public Health Agency of Canada said that the app was downloaded on 6,361,424 cell phones, or just 18.8% of all Canadian cell phones.
With few Canadians downloading the app and even fewer using it as intended, health experts have called the COVID Alert app “completely useless.”
Despite claims from the federal government that the app will protect Canadians’ information, the Office of Canada’s Privacy Commissioner has stated there is a chance anonymity may not be maintained.
Privacy concerns have been the main reason why people have consistently refused government COVID-19 tracing apps around the world.

Liberal members approve universal basic income during convention
Members of the Liberal Party of Canada have endorsed a resolution calling on the federal government to develop and implement a universal basic income.
The resolution was co-sponsored by the Liberal caucus and passed by a vote of 491-85 at the Liberal party’s virtual convention. It will automatically become official party policy.
Other resolutions that were passed during the convention include national standards for long-term care homes, a national pharmacare program and a “green new deal” which calls for a “just and fair” to transition to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
According to a recent report by the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO), introducing a universal basic income (UBI) would cost the government over $85 billion and raise taxes on the middle class.
The PBO’s report estimates that providing a universal basic income would cost $85 billion if introduced this year, or approximately 25% of the federal budget.
While providing benefits to the poorest 40% of Canadians, the report found that the top 60% of households will actually lose money as the government would raise taxes and cut other benefits to provide UBI.
In February, Liberal MP Julie Dzerowicz proposed a bill to study the implementation of UBI, suggesting the idea had support in the Trudeau cabinet.
According to the Fraser Institute, another possible version of UBI that is modeled after Old Age Security would cost up to $131.9 billion per year.

Canada's Green Shift Could Displace Three-Quarters Of Oil Workers
Canada’s climate strategy to significantly cut emissions and become a net-zero emissions economy by 2050 will create a seismic shift in the large oil and gas sector, where up to three-quarters of the workers, or up to 450,000 people, are at risk of displacement, TD Bank said in a new report on Tuesday.
Canada aims to become a net-zero emissions economy within three decades, and to cut emissions by between 32 percent and 40 percent by 2030.
While those commitments could be critical to staving off the worst effects of global warming, Canada needs to take significant action, including coming to terms with the effect of climate policies on the oil and gas workers, the bank said.
“According to Natural Resources Canada, roughly 600,000 Canadians, located mostly in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador are either directly or indirectly employed in the oil & gas sector. We estimate between 50-75% of those workers are at risk of displacement in the transition through 2050, equivalent to 312,000 – 450,000 workers,” TD Bank said in the report.
“The belief is that many of those displaced will find a home in the clean energy sector, but we should not assume that the transition will absorb all displaced workers,” the bank said, noting that it is critical that Canada do not repeat past mistakes and ensure a just transition for energy sector workers.
“The clean-energy transition will create many new job opportunities, but there is no guarantee or automatic market mechanism to ensure these benefits accrue to where the costs will be borne on the displacement,” according to the bank.
South of the border, in the United States, thousands of oil and gas jobs disappeared during the oil price and demand crash last year, and more and more former oil workers moved to jobs in the clean energy business. However, they have also taken a pay cut moving to renewables as the industry still pays lower than oil and gas.

UPS Buying Vertical Takeoff Aircraft For Time-Sensitive Deliveries
About 1.5 years after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) granted UPS Flight Forward the ability to start a drone airline business, UPS Flight Forward announced Wednesday plans to purchase electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft from Beta Technologies.
The first ten BETA aircraft are scheduled to enter UPS Flight Forward's fleet by 2024, with an option to purchase an additional 150 more. Each eVTOL aircraft can carry upwards of 1,400 pounds of cargo and take off and land at UPS facilities in small and mid-size markets.
Ideally, the BETA aircraft will transport time-sensitive packages that would otherwise fly on small fixed-wing planes. The aircraft has a distance of 250 miles and can cruise at 170 mph. UPS will integrate the fleet of eVTOL aircraft for short routes that will ultimately speed up delivery times.
"This is all about innovation with a focus on returns for our business, our customers, and the environment," said UPS Chief Information and Engineering Officer Juan Perez.
Perez continued: "These new aircraft will create operational efficiencies in our business, open possibilities for new services, and serve as a foundation for future solutions to reduce the emissions profile of our air and ground operation."
BETA's eVTOL is designed to fly autonomously as UPS Flight Forward received the first FAA Part 135 Standard air carrier certification to operate a drone airline in 2019. The FAA certification will allow UPS to eventually fly payloads up to 7,500 lbs. with an operator or autonomously.
UPS Flight Forward's future plans appear to be riveting as the package delivery and supply chain management company will soon begin to integrate large unmanned aircraft systems into our airspace to improve the delivery of time-sensitive packages across metro areas and regions.

The UK Government have released their tenth report highlighting adverse reactions to both the Pfizer / BioNTech and Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccines that have occurred since the roll-out began on the 8th December 2020, and this week the Government finally admitted that the AstraZeneca vaccine was to blame for the reports of dangerous blood clots that have also been seen in countries around the world, but is that all we have to worry about?
The U.K. Governments report (which you can find here) has collated data inputted up to the 28th March via the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme. At this point an estimated 10.9 million first doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and 19.5 million first doses of the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine, had been administered. There were also around 3.7 million second doses, mostly of which were the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine.

People’s Party of Canada (PPC) leader Maxime Bernier and independent MP Derek Sloan were two of the featured speakers at the “Stand Up Speak Up” rally in Vancouver on Saturday.
The event was organized to protest child gender transitioning in solidarity with the BC father known as “CD.” CD was arrested on March 16, 2021 and is currently in jail because he spoke out publicly against the medical transition of his 14-year old daughter and violated a court publication ban in doing so.

On Sunday, Quebec’s new and not-so-improved curfew kicked in. You may recall that curfew in La Belle Province used to be 8 p.m. Then, a few weeks ago, it was extended to 9:30 p.m. And now it’s back to 8 p.m.
Why? Who knows? And how dare you ask for a valid answer!
So it was that several hundred (mostly young) people showed up to take part in a freedom demonstration near the port lands of Montreal and at some parks. Chants of “Liberté! Liberté!” filled the air.
Alas, it wasn’t long before the heavily-armed riot squad of the Montreal Police Service showed up to quell the festivities, because unlike yesteryear, Montreal — which is usually home to the Just For Laughs comedy festival — is now a No Fun Zone. And the riot squad made certain to disperse the demonstrators.
Another black mark on the evening was a small faction of demonstrators — who may have been rank and file members of the Black Bloc — smashing the windows of small businesses. Fires also erupted in the streets. That was an absolute disgrace; small businesses are among the biggest victims of the crackpot COVID crackdowns — why further penalize mom-and-pop shops barely hanging on?
But the vast majority of protesters were indeed peaceful. And all they want to do is live their lives freely. Too bad their political masters have other ideas…

Justin Trudeau’s government threatened to cancel funding to an international security group over a planned award to the president of Taiwan, a Politico report alleges.
According to the Politico story, the threat came in response to the Halifax International Security Forum (HFX)’s intention to give its John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen for her resilience in the face of Chinese aggression.
The report, citing a multitude of sources, says the Trudeau government warned HFX it would cut support to the security forum if it followed through on the award, allegedly out of fear of upsetting the Chinese communist party.
In a statement, HFX said that while Tsai Ing-wen is a deserving candidate for the award, the official winner has not been decided.
“HFX has not yet announced the winner of the 2020 John McCain Prize for leadership in public service. We look forward to making the announcement, and conducting a presentation event at an appropriate time, given the challenges that the Covid-19 pandemic presents,” said Vice President Robin Shepherd.
“President Tsai of Taiwan is a well respected international leader, the first female president of Taiwan, and a strong global advocate for democracy. She would certainly be an ideal fit for this award. At this time, we have no further announcements to make.”
HFX, a widely-attended annual summit for defense and security leaders, has taken a strong stance against China in the past, having previously given the same award to the people of Hong Kong for standing up for China.
Canada-China relations have sharply declined since Canadian police arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. warrant in 2019. China countered by arresting two Canadian citizens and banning certain Canadian products.
Despite China’s increasingly hostile treatment of Canada, the Trudeau government has refused to improve relations with Taiwan.
Last year, the Trudeau government refused to reference Taiwan directly when asked to thank the country for donating medical supplies to Canada.
Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan’s office would not comment on whether the government intervened in any way over the planned award.
“The Government of Canada has provided financial support through a contribution agreement with the Halifax International Security Forum,” a spokesperson said.
“While financial support has been provided, the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces are not involved in the planning of the Forum. The organizers reach out to us, as well as many other organizations, for panelists on various topics and we try to support when appropriate.”

Normally, we would rail against government inefficiency and ineptitude — but not this time around. You see, for those Ontarians receiving Wuhan virus tickets in excess of $1,000, it’s like Christmastime in springtime, thanks to the Ontario court computer system’s inability to process tickets of more than $1,000.
Indeed, according to research conducted by the Rebel News Fight The Fines legal team, tickets in excess of $1,000 simply cannot be processed. And it doesn’t appear that there is any motivation by the province to put in an emergency call to Nerds on Site or the Geek Squad to fix the issue.
All of which means that one of three things is now occurring to tickets over $1,000: the tickets are simply being tossed in the trash can (and so far, dozens of tickets are currently residing in the “round file”). Or the court clerk reduces the dollar amount of the ticket amount to zero (meaning automatic victory, of course). Or, the clerk reduces the ticket to $1,000 — which keeps it in the system, albeit at a considerable discount, given that many of these Quarantine Act tickets are in the sum of $3,750.

On April 7th, the Coalition of Muslims Against anti-Semitism (CMAA) held its inaugural event marking Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Based in Toronto, Canada, the organization states that it is seeking to partner with Muslim thinkers, professionals and activists from around the world who are committed to fighting anti-Semitism in all its forms.
“We deliberately chose to launch our organization on Israel’s Holocaust Memorial Day, known in Israel as Yom HaShoah, as opposed to the UN-designated international holocaust remembrance day on Jan 22,” said Raheel Raza, President of the Council of Muslims Against anti-Semitism. “We are doing so to make a point as loudly and clearly as possible.”
“This anti-Semitic demonization of the Jewish state is a common and central theme in contemporary extreme left, extreme right and Islamist [groups.]”
The CMAA has also differentiated itself from other Muslim organizations by not only adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism but by stating forcefully that attempts to diminish or undermine the definition serve only to promote, rather than combat anti-Semitism.
When asked what role Canada could play in combatting anti-Semitism globally in the Muslim world, Raza told True North that “Canada holds a great place of prominence in most of the Muslim world. They also give a lot of aid to Muslim majority countries so if the government has combatting anti-Semitism on its agenda they can play a critical role in this field.”
Raza was also hopeful that in the coming years more non-Arab Muslim States would recognize Israel “especially if Saudi Arabia does,” and that this is where change would come.
The CMAA steering committe member and founder of the Muslim Women Speakers Movement Soraya Deen echoed Raza’s statements.
“anti-Semitism is a pandemic that has been raging for many years, unfortunately we have no vaccine that can cure it,” said Deen.
“anti-Semitic incitement in the mosques in America must be a cause for concern…Radical imams and certain community members are spewing anti-Semitism in the US.”
Other CMAA Steering Committee members included Rimmel Khan, Sohail Raza and Salman Sima. Its advisory board includes the President and Founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy Dr. Zuhdi Jasser and former Pakistani Diplomat Naeem Hassan, among others.

Liberal Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault said regulations on online hate speech could “theoretically” include the ability for the government to block access to non-compliant websites.
Guilbeault said this during a virtual panel on online harms hosted by the Liberal-connected group Canada 2020.
Guilbeault said the government would create a “new body” to oversee enforcing any incoming internet regulation, with the potential for the proposed regulator to use “blocking orders” to deny Canadians access to websites that do not comply with government content rules.
“Could we envision having blocking orders? Maybe. It would likely be a last resort, a nuclear bomb in a toolbox of mechanisms for a regulator,” said Guilbeault. “It’s pretty extreme, but theoretically it is a tool that is out there and could potentially be used. But really no decisions have been made on that. This is something you would see as part of the regulations most likely.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has tasked Guilbeault with crafting several pieces of legislation including a revamping of Canada’s Broadcasting Act and a new regulatory system meant to address online hate, disinformation and misinformation.
In his mandate letter to Guilbeault, Trudeau directed the minister to treat online hate speech regulation as a top priority for his term.
While the promised bill has not yet been tabled, Guilbeault has said it will define hate based on the Supreme Court of Canada’s Whatcott decision, which found even truthful statements can be classified as hate speech depending on the utterer’s intent.
Earlier in the Canada 2020 discussion, Guilbeault drew attention to general concerns about abusive content directed at politicians and their families.
“We have seen too many examples of public officials retreating from public service due to the hateful online content targeted towards themselves or even their families,” said Guilbeault during an opening statement.
“I have seen first hand alongside other Canadians the damaging effects harmful content has on our families, our values and our institutions. As a dad and a stepdad to six kids, I know more can and should be done to create a safer online environment.”

Trudeau gov’t denies threatening funding for Halifax Security Forum over giving award to Taiwan president

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government reportedly threatened to pull financial support for the Halifax Security Forum (HFX) over its alleged proposal to present Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen with an award.
Sources from the prestigious security forum told Politico on Sunday that HFX intends to present the Taiwanese leader with the 2020 John McCain Prize for Leadership and Public Service. The move would put the Canadian government on the bad side of the Chinese government, which obviously opposes Taiwan or any recognition of its sovereignty as an independent nation.
On Monday, Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan denied that the funding for the HFX had been called into question. “No, in fact, I authorized funding for the Halifax International Security Forum twice last year,” the minister said to a special parliamentary committee meeting.
Sajjan refused to answer if he would endorse Tsai’s receipt of the prize, according to a follow-up story by Politico.
China has long maintained that Taiwan is a breakoff territory of China and does not recognize the legitimacy of the Taiwanese government, which it often refers to as “dissidents” and “rebels.”
Chinese military leaders have expressed a desire to take over the island nation by force and reunify it with the mainland.
The move to honour Taiwan’s president places the Canadian government, a major sponsor of the Halifax Forum, at odds with the communist government.
The presentation would have been the third time HFX has presented the John McCain Award, which was first presented to the people of Lesbos in Greece for assisting refugees in 2018. In 2019, the award went to citizen protesters in Hong Kong for resisting the communist government of China.
The award to the Taiwanese president would have been for standing against pressure from the country’s communist neighbour.
Politico reports that when the Trudeau government learned of the forum’s plans to present Tsai with the award, they threatened to pull support and funding from the forum.
The Halifax Forum is supported by NATO and draws leaders from around the world for discussions.
“HFX has not yet announced the winner of the 2020 John McCain Prize for leadership in public service,” said HFX Vice President Robin Shepherd. “We look forward to making the announcement, and conducting a presentation event at an appropriate time, given the challenges that the Covid-19 pandemic presents.”
“President Tsai of Taiwan is a respected international leader, the first female president of Taiwan, and a strong global advocate for democracy. She would certainly be an ideal fit for this award. At this time, we have no further announcements to make.”

MPs refuse to show support for politician salary reduction during COVID-19

The vast majority of Members of Parliament were unresponsive when asked whether or not they would support a salary reduction for politicians until the economy is fully reopened.
At the height of the pandemic, True North Initiative put out a petition calling for MPs to take a salary reduction while many Canadians are forced to adhere to government-imposed lockdowns. The petition has since been signed by over 20,000 Canadians.
“Shutting down restaurants, gyms and other businesses takes aim at working-aged Canadians and ignores everything we have learned about COVID-19 in the last few months,” reads the petition.
“If politicians continue to insist on more lockdown measures, they should also feel the economic impact of their decisions. We’re calling on all Canadian politicians to take a pay cut until they fully reopen the economy. It’s only fair.”
True North reached out to all 338 members of parliament to ask whether they would individually support a cut to their pay in support of the many Canadians who continue to struggle to make ends meet. Only two elected officials responded to our request for comment.
“This question really needs to be answered by the Trudeau Liberals. Canada’s Conservatives are, and will remain, focused on ensuring Canada’s recovery and securing the future,” said Conservative MP and Chief Opposition Whip Blake Richards.
Several requests for comment from NDP MP Peter Julian went unanswered despite attempts to arrange a phone interview through his office.
Meanwhile, Liberal MP Wayne Easter responded by saying that he would “not at all” support a pay reduction for politicians.
“In fact in my experience most politicians and their staffs have worked even longer and tougher hours during the pandemic to put together new programs in record time and support constituents with their issues and questions. I’ve been averaging about 11-12 hours days for a full year now, and often am in the office or on Zooms till near midnight,” Easter told True North.
“I also believe in life you get what you pay for. If we’re going to be cheap with our politicians and government, we’re going to get crappy politicians and governments. Something as important as our democracy shouldn’t be short-changed.”
Easter also pointed out that if all MPs took a $20,000 pay cut, the nearly $7 million saved would be “nothing other than virtue signaling” since it would total only 87 cents per Canadians if individually broken up among the population.
Earlier this month, all MPs received an annual pay bump to their salaries totaling a 1.8% increase.
In 2021, MPs received a salary of $182,000 while cabinet ministers got $269,800. As for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, his pay increased by around $6,400 to a total of $365,200 a year.
Tourism industry slams quarantine hotels, border closures

The head of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) says the Trudeau government’s quarantine hotels and travel restrictions are not fair or effective.
Speaking at a tourism industry conference, TIAC CEO Beth Potter said restrictions on travel are crushing their industry, meanwhile Canadians are not better protected from COVID-19.
“Countries around the world have amended their approach to quarantine using evidence-based data that supports reduced quarantine and an increased testing regime as a more effective way to protect populations,” she said.
“We believe Canada needs to rethink quarantine rules and invest in rapid testing and contact tracing.”
Along with 14 days of isolation, people entering Canada are also forced to pay up to $2,000 per person to stay in government-approved hotels. The immense cost and hotel horror stories have discouraged many would-be travellers.
Potter says there are much better ways to ensure travellers do not spread the coronavirus. Many countries have already reopened for foreign tourists.
The tourism industry is among the hardest hit by the pandemic. In 2019, tourism brought in $104.9 billion and was the single largest employer of Canadian youth. Tourism sector workers are twice as likely to be unemployed in 2021.
Potter also says limits on interprovincial and international travel have gone on for too long. TIAC is asking the Trudeau government to set a tentative date to reopen the Canada-U.S. border.
“Tourism stakeholders have a shared commitment on keeping Canadians safe. We are asking the federal government for a plan or conditions for reopening interprovincial and international borders. It is important for our members to have time to plan, to prepare for reopening, to ramp up operations, to hire back staff, and to communicate with their clients.”
“Uncertainty is not a plan that ensures a successful recovery.”

Trudeau defends government’s vaccine rollout

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government made no mistakes in procuring and distributing COVID-19 vaccines.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Trudeau was asked if, in hindsight, there was anything the government could have done better. Despite Canada’s vaccination rates far below many countries, Trudeau said he has no regrets.
“No, not in terms of our vaccine rollout. Obviously, we worked extremely hard from last summer onwards to sign many different contracts with different potential vaccine makers around the world,” Trudeau said Tuesday.
“In general, the vaccines have been arriving in Canada in steadily increasing numbers.”
As many countries were developing vaccines in 2020, the Trudeau government only pre-ordered vaccines from CanSino Biologics, a Chinese firm connected to the Chinese Communist Party. China would later block vaccine shipments to Canada.
Once vaccines started arriving in Canada, shipments were small and Pfizer temporarily stopped shipping to Canada in January. With no domestic production, Canada has been at the mercy of governments like that of the European Union, which has restricted exports to meet its own domestic needs.
Canada currently ranks 45th in terms of vaccinations, with the United States and most of Europe well ahead.
Trudeau added that he does not believe high vaccination rates will guarantee an end to lockdowns.
“I think it’s important to remember that vaccination alone, even being well advanced in vaccinations, doesn’t necessarily lead to an ability to ease public restrictions.”

Meet Len Faul, a retired police officer who served over 30 years with the Toronto Police Service. He is also one of the driving forces behind Police on Guard for Thee.
Police on Guard for Thee is described as “a group of active duty and retired police officers who have assembled to create a haven of truth and justice for all members.”
We bumped into Len last month at the Family Fun Day protest on Parliament Hill. And it was such a joy speaking to someone from the law enforcement realm who is disturbed by the behaviour of certain police officers when it comes to trampling upon the rights of citizens, ostensibly in the name of Wuhan virus “public safety.”
But, notably, not all police officers are acting like bullies these days. Says Len: “There are officers that genuinely, genuinely believe in their oath to protect our citizens,” and these officers are increasingly signing up with Police on Guard.
As well, Len notes the “greatest power police officers have is their power of discretion” (someone please tell the Montreal Police Service about this truism). He added that lockdown measures “clearly breach everybody’s rights” — and breaching the rights of the citizenry is not valid policing; quite the contrary, actually.
Finally, Len takes a dim view of the mainstream media because media outlets are “driving the process by fear right now.”

CNN host Jake Tapper slammed Justin Trudeau on Twitter after the prime minister accused the US network of not factually representing Canada’s COVID-19 vaccination response in the House of Commons on Tuesday.
At the centre of the dispute was a Monday evening segment on CNN’s The Lead which dug into Trudeau’s failure to acquire enough vaccines in a timely fashion while the country undergoes a third wave of the virus.
“This is a problem where you have to rewind decades to really get to the heart of this problem but that doesn’t let the Trudeau government off the hook. They’ve been in power for more than five years, they heard the dire predictions,” CNN anchor Paula Newton told Tapper.
“This country for decades had a competitive advantage in making vaccines, the research was right here. Look, Canadians will now pay for that complacency.”
During a question period exchange with Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole, the prime minister was asked whether his handling of Canada’s vaccination campaign was contributing to the ongoing third wave of the virus.
“The prime minister made CNN last night – the headline ‘Canada’s vaccine shortage.’ Jake Tapper told viewers around the world that the Canadian government had failed. Will the prime minister admit that his failure to secure sufficient vaccines is leading to a catastrophic third wave?” asked O’Toole.
“It’s important that we stay grounded in the facts in this conversation. Canada is actually third in the G20 in terms of vaccines delivered to people and were going to continue to work even harder to get more vaccines into Canada and into arms as quickly as possible,” replied Trudeau.
“That’s what this government’s focus is. At the same time we are supporting the provinces, the families and business owners so that we can do the restrictions necessary to get people through this third wave. We need to get people vaccinated and we need to get the caseloads down before we start easing restrictions and that’s what we’re focused on.”
Soon after the exchange, Tapper responded on Twitter demanding that the prime minister clarify what part of the CNN report he disputed.
Critics of the Trudeau Liberals have accused them of botching Canada’s vaccination rollout after significant delays in vaccine shipments and the Trudeau government’s decision to partner with China on the botched CanSino vaccination deal.
Currently, Canada ranks 32nd globally in the share of people who have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Several countries including Barbados, Uruguay and Serbia rank higher than Canada on the list.
