Comes from the advent of standards testing in public schools, if you ask me.
Two things about it make it numb the brain:
The "correct answer" is known by an established governmental agency, state or federal. The correctness of what you "know" is determined by the government, who has all the right answers.
Multiple choice. Every concept is reduced to a binary decision when determining your answer. You could pass the test by knowing all the wrong answers, if need be. Take the practice tests over and over, the online ones that give you the correct answer, and remember enough of the ones you got wrong or right. No need to know why the answer is right or wrong.
