West Point expels eight cadets and holds 51 back a year after 73 were accused of taking part in the military academy's biggest cheating scandal in more than four decades
The cadets were accused of cheating on an online freshman calculus exam in May while students were studying remotely because of coronavirus
An investigation was launched after instructors noticed irregularities in answers
West Point said that of the 73 cases investigated by the cadet honor committee, six cadets resigned during the investigation, four were acquitted by their peers
Two cases were dropped due to insufficient evidence, officials said
Most of the cadets, 51, were 'turned back' one year after admitting to cheating
Cadets at the officer training academy on the Hudson River are bound by an honor code that they 'will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do'
In 1976, 153 upperclassmen resigned or were expelled for cheating on exam
