Were people aware of the sheer extent of some of the things, like embedded spying technologies in USB cables? I doubt that very much.
If surveilling everyone and trashing everyone's right to privacy was the answer to terrorism etc., then it wasn't very effective (obviously anons know that it wasn't really about stopping terrorism but control of the people, mining data for financial gain/blackmail/control purposes).
