Nicotine by itself isn't addictive. Rats given access to it ad libitum will not self administer.

 

Mix nicotine with the harmala alkaloids from a tobacco plant, however…they will not stop self administering it.

 

Together they are a weak MAOI…so they act like an antidepressant…which is bad for withdrawals because on top of the physical w/d, a depression will set in for a while until it clears up. Why relapses are so common.
