As Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial approaches for the alleged trafficking of underage girls for Jeffrey Epstein, her family and lawyers are mounting an aggressive push to defend her name—and they’ve found vocal allies in an unexpected place. While Maxwell is known for past ties to prominent Democrats such as Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea, her cause has attracted right-wing figures, including provocateur Jacob Wohl and a British blogger who has criticized Black Lives Matter and who has recently emerged as a chief defender of the posh socialite.
Last month, Maxwell’s brother Ian granted an extensive and exclusive interview to Jay Beecher, a scribe for right-wing websites in England.
“Simply put, her present media image is a 180 degrees from who she really is,” Ian Maxwell said in a June 20 story on Beecher’s site VoteWatch, weeks after the sibling had granted sit-downs to only a handful of mainstream outlets including the Washington Post, ABC News, and the BBC. “Since the start, with occasional and notable exceptions,” Ian added, “the media’s reporting of Ghislaine has been as one-sided as it has been wrong.”

A SARS-CoV-2 variant that meets the definition of a VOI (see below) and, through a comparative assessment, has been demonstrated to be associated with one or more of the following changes at a degree of global public health significance:

Joy Christiansen Erb is a contemporary photographer and artist whose creative research explores themes such as memory, identity, and storytelling. Her most recent body of work explores the subjects of motherhood and family. This body of work is an autobiographical journey examining the lives of her family and her domestic space. The images included in the series document both the struggles and triumphs of everyday life.
Her photography has gained recognition through regional and national exhibitions and lectures as well as a 2015 Ohio Individual Excellence Award from the Ohio Arts Council. Recent solo exhibition venues include the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Center for the Emerging Visual Artists in Philadelphia, Peoria Arts Guild and the Galveston Arts Center. Recent group exhibitions include Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, OR, the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, MA, Center for Photography at Woodstock and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland.
Christiansen Erb’s artwork has been highlighted in a variety of publications including two notable textbooks. A portfolio of her most recent work is housed at the Museum of Contemporary Photography as a part of the Midwest Photographers Project in Chicago, IL. In 2016 she received a Distinguished Professorship Award in Scholarship from Youngstown State University.
She currently resides in Youngstown, Ohio, where she is an Associate Professor of Photography and Acting Chair of the Department of Art at Youngstown State University. She received her B.F.A. from Miami University, Oxford, OH in 2001 and her M.F.A. from Texas Woman’s University, Denton, TX in 2005.

After the birth of her first child, Joy Christiansen Erb began photographing her experience as a mother in her series, Portrait of a Mother (2010-2014). The two-part series follows the lives of each of her two children and features unapologetically honest glimpses of her young family, including images of a collection of postpartum shed hair, a snot-crusted nose, and a urine stained toilet training chair. The images both act as a document of the daily rituals of the artist’s life with two small children, while also challenging the common and historical representation of motherhood like Madonna and Child imagery or the idyllic representations commonly found in advertisements. Christiansen Erb chooses to reveal the awkward and ordinary bits of motherhood, as well as the uncertainty and disorder, documenting the less glamourous sides of maternity.

Georgia boy dies of COVID-19 as cases surge nationwide
A 5-year-old Georgia boy with no underlying health conditions died of COVID-19 last week, a report said.
Wyatt Gibson, from the city of Calhoun, lost his life after a short battle with the illness at a hospital across the border in Chattanooga, Tennessee, relatives told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“In a way, I know that you’re still here, but I miss you so damn much!” the child’s heartbroken father, Wes Gibson wrote on Facebook. “I have lost my best friend.”
The father and his infant sister have also contracted coronavirus, Wyatt’s godmother, Amanda Summey told the newspaper.
Wyatt’s death comes as COVID-19 cases have again surged across the nation. The spike is being fueled by the more infectious Delta variant and a slowdown in vaccinations.
Vaccinations have not been authorized for children under 12. Deaths among the age group, however, are extremely rare.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of the roughly 600,000 COVID-19 deaths in the US, 335 were of people under the age of 18, the report said.

Harry Rosenfeld, key editor in exposing Watergate, dies at 91
Harry Rosenfeld, a refugee from Nazi Germany who became the Washington Post editor who helped two dogged reporters expose the Watergate scandal, has died at 91.
His daughter, Amy Rosenfeld Kaufman told The Washington Post that her father died July 16 from COVID-19 complications, at his home in Slingerlands, a suburb of Albany, New York.
Rosenfeld was the assistant managing editor for metropolitan news in 1972 when Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were closing in on the scandal behind the bungled burglary at the Democratic campaign headquarters at the Watergate hotel in Washington, DC Their reporting would eventually directly implicate President Richard Nixon in the crime and the cover-up, and bring about his resignation.
As the parameters of the story’s seriousness grew clear, the Post’s editor-in-chief, Ben Bradlee, wanted Rosenfeld to replace Woodward and Bernstein with more seasoned reporters. But Rosenfeld wouldn’t stand down. “They’re hungry,” he told Bradlee. “You remember when you were hungry?”
The line was immortalized in the movie about the Post’s coverage of Watergate, “All The President’s Men,” by Jack Warden, playing Rosenfeld. (In the movie, Rosenfeld delivers the line to the Post’s managing editor, Howard Simons.)
He was born Hirsch Moritz Rosenfeld in Berlin in 1929 and witnessed the carnage of Kristallnacht, the Nazi-led pogroms, in 1938, seeing hoodlums burn his synagogue. In 1939, the United States approved his father’s application, made five years earlier, for the family to immigrate.
In his memoir, titled “From Kristallnacht to Watergate: Memoirs of a Newspaperman,” Rosenfeld admitted to resenting Bradlee’s privileged upbringing. “When he was a young kid, he learned to play” tennis, Rosenfeld wrote. “When I was a young kid, I dodged Nazis.”
He was raised in New York, and never lost his tabloid sensibility, the Post reported in the obituary. The hard-driving editor acknowledged being abrasive. Bradlee demoted him when Rosenfeld published an exposé of an extramarital affair between Bradlee’s sister-in-law and John F. Kennedy. Rosenfeld left in 1978 to become editor of the Albany Times Union, where he worked until he retired in 1996 and to which he contributed until his death.
Despite — or because — of the hard time he gave his reporters, some of them remained loyal to him.
“Harry was always the great, aggressive, hard-charging editor,” the Post quoted Woodward as saying. “But his message to his reporters was that we gather hard facts, listen to all, and listen some more. Careful, patient listening was the key.”

Identification of SARS-CoV-2 E Channel Blockers from a Repurposed Drug Library
SARS-CoV-2, the etiological agent of the COVID-19 pandemic, is a member of the Coronaviridae family. It is an enveloped virus with ion channels in its membrane, the most characterized of which is the E protein. Therefore, in an attempt to identify blockers of the E channel, we screened a library of 2839 approved-for-human-use drugs. Our approach yielded eight compounds that exhibited appreciable activity in three bacteria-based channel assays. Considering the fact that the E channel is the most conserved of all SARS-CoV-2 proteins, any inhibitor of its activity may provide an option to curb the viral spread. In addition, inhibitors can also enhance our ability to understand the exact role played by the E protein during the infectivity cycle. Finally, detailed electrophysiological analyses, alongside in vitro and in vivo studies will be needed to establish the exact potential of each of the blockers identified in our study.
Multiple, independent bacteria-based assays were able to retrieve eight compounds from a library of 2839 approved-for-human-use drugs that inhibit SARS-CoV-2 E protein. Since E protein is an essential component of the pathogen, as well as the most conserved of all SARS-CoV-2 proteins, any of its inhibitors represents a potential avenue to curb infectivity. As such, the stage is now set for in vitro and in vivo studies (in appropriate bio-safety facilities) to examine the effects of the compounds on the virus. Similarly, electrophysiological studies will be required to determine the molecular details that characterize each blocker’s activity.
