Navyfag here. If that is indeed an SM-3, that means it's possible a Ballistic Missile was fired. SM-3s primary mission is anti-ballistic missile defense (BMD). Range is about 1350 miles. If there was a ballistic missile, then it would have passed Alaska (see pic). Meaning that it was probably meant for the west coast. Not sure where, but just trying to help add to the conversation.

Doubtful. SM-3s are surface ship based (DDGs, CGs). Land based variant coming 2020. There is a Naval based near Whidbey Island that houses DDGs with SM-3 anti-BMD capabilities. If this came from us, it would have come from a surface ship. I am not aware of a submarine capable SM-3 variant.

Could this have anything to do with the recent Chinese hack of the US Navy?
