I always found their assassination very strange. Nikolas wasn't some tyrant and the riots only broke out once he left his home to visit the front lines of the world war. A war he already wasn't very enthusiastic about. Smells of deep state shenanigans to me. Because it happened during the first WW it is basically a foot note in history. Seems like by design.
