Many people forget this……….In the book, the action took place around Saturn, the book and the film changed this, I believe as an advert and to drum up interest for the Pioneer 10 mission. Pioneer 11 did fly past Saturn but it was nothing special. NASA and Kubrick worked together to move emphasis to Jupiter.
