I think NATO still exists because the EU people were hoping to use it as a stepping stone to an EU armed forces. Remember when Obama was going to shut many bases and bring soldiers home? The EU was going to take over the bases, the equipment left behind, and suddenly the EU army would be there before people have time to object.

But the US generals preparing a coup to overthrow the government after the 2016 election, did not want this. They went to Russia to ask for some help making EU countries feel insecure. Then the Pentagon kicked off exercises all over Europe and moved men and materials to Europe to hide them from the traitors in the USA loyal to Obama.

It was all a big show, and because Trump joined the coup plotters, they were able to legitimately win an election and take power without a coup.

As the rest of Europe starts to pull their weight in defense spending they will also get more involved in NATO kick out the Nazi holdovers, and eventually devolve it into some kind of European Military Cooperation Council that runs annual military games like the Olympics.
