Officials at FBI headquarters instructed its New York field office to continue its corruption investigation into the Clinton Foundation following the election of Republican candidate Donald Trump, according to a former senior law enforcement official. The spark for the FBI investigation appeared to be secret recordings of suspects in Los Angeles involved in money laundering activities who mentioned the Clinton Foundation. The disclosure triggered an investigation in that city beginning last February, according to the Wall Street Journal. Senior Justice Department officials reportedly were openly skeptical of the Clinton Foundation case and repeatedly tried to shut down the bureau’s probe. But the department was not able to shut down the FBI activities.

Secret recordings of a suspect talking about the Clinton Foundation fueled an internal battle between FBI agents who wanted to pursue the case and corruption prosecutors who viewed the statements as worthless hearsay, people familiar with the matter said. Starting in February and continuing today, investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and public-corruption prosecutors became increasingly frustrated with each other, as often happens within and between departments. At the center of the tension stood the U.S. attorney for Brooklyn, Robert Capers, who some at the FBI came to view as exacerbating the problems by telling each side what it wanted to hear, these people said. Through a spokeswoman, Mr. Capers declined to comment

Robert L. Capers, a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, was nominated by the White House on Thursday to be the next United States attorney for the Eastern District, which covers Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Long Island. If confirmed by the Senate, Mr. Capers, who is 44, would fill the post vacated by Loretta Lynch, who left the Eastern District to become the United States attorney general in April. Since then the office has been headed by Kelly T. Currie, who is serving in an acting capacity. “Robert Capers is in the mold of Loretta Lynch,” said Mr. Schumer, a Democrat. “Really smart, hardworking, nose to the grindstone. Robert Capers has been a prosecutor for 22 years and knows the value of locking up violent criminals and drug kingpins who tear at the fabric of our neighborhood.”

Robert Capers, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, was instructed to resign his position by the Trump administration on Friday.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered the resignations of the 46 remaining U.S. attorneys who were appointed during the Obama administration.

Southern District U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara was also swept out of office on Friday, despite an earlier agreement with President Donald Trump to let him stay on. On Saturday, Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara wrote on his personal Twitter account that he was fired after he refused to turn in his resignation.

UPDATE: AP reports that Michigan Rep. John Conyers, the House Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, requested Saturday that the committee receive a summary of probes linked to Trump, whether they touch on his administration, transition, campaign and organization, "so that we can understand the full implications of this weekend's firings." He said he suspected Bharara "could be reviewing a range of potential improper activity emanating from Trump Tower and the Trump campaign, as well as entities with financial ties to the president or the Trump organization."
