The one thing that always works when the conversation turns to disbelief, regardless of “subject”, is simply asking about good and evil, the light and the dark. “If we can agree that there is light, then there must be dark. If there is good in people, why not unspeakable evil?”
And then I shut up! Even change the subject. Every single time, the next conversation is either, “tell me more” or “have you heard about?”
