Also back before cable most people used antennae's and the signal would drift so someone was usually tasked with going out and turning it one way or another to catch the signal again. The same thing happens on FM stations still.

Sometimes when you are listening on an older radio you have to keep adjusting the tuner once in a while, especially at night when listening to a station a long ways away. They fade in and out if you don't.
