I have an MA in Classics. Christendom took over the Roman boundaries and expanded them far beyond the Empire about 1400 years ago. When you say "the Greeks," you basically mean one city, Athens. That flourished c. 500 BC. What we call Western Civ is entirely a creation of the Church. Greece and Rome were early contributing factors.
