t looks like the Pentagon might send a lot more troops to the southern border than initially anticipated.

The Department of Defense announced Friday it would send additional military personnel to the U.S.-Mexico border. Initial media reports said anywhere between 800 to 1,000 people would be sent.

But Monday, that reported troop estimate jumped up to 5,000.

Whatever the number, the additional personnel will be on top of the 2,100 National Guard members already supporting U.S. Customs and Border Protection efforts along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The extra military personnel will help with surveillance, reinforcing barriers, providing medical support and providing temporary housing.

The reinforcements are expected to start arriving at the border Oct. 30, ahead of the migrant caravan that's currently making its way north through Mexico.
