Task Force 72

Mission Statement:

CTF 72 leads patrol, reconnaissance and surveillance forces in support of U.S. SEVENTH fleet. We maintain readiness to support today's maritime contingency and are ready for tomorrow's adversaries. We promote regional security and enhancement of theater security operations through multilateral engagements to build, reconnaissance and surveillance capability within SEVENTH fleet and partner forces. We seek close interoperability with allied forces, friendly nations, and other U.S. military services in execution of this mission.

War Eagles of Patrol Squadron 16 (VP-16) successfully deployed the P-8A maritime patrol aircraft to support the commander of Task Force (CTF) 72, through the western Pacific area of operations with anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare.

The aircraft provided intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, maritime domain awareness, search and rescue, carrier strike group coordination and theatre security cooperation tasks.

ODIN THOR OWL EAGLE APACHE

Task Force ODIN was made available to Brigade level commanders, and fully integrated with direct action assets such as OH-58D Kiowa Warriors and AH-64D Apaches, which could also be called in to strike targets detected by elements of the Task Force.

There are many sub-divisions in the task force: Highlighter, Desert Owl and Night Eagle to name a few.

The United States Army has stood up Joint Task Force Thor on October 1, 2014. The United States Air Force has inactivated the 4th Expeditionary Reconnaissance Squadron which has been operating as part of Task Force Odin. The 4th ERS was part of the Project Liberty program created in response to intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance requirement shortfalls in the skies of Afghanistan. The 4th ERS core mission was to provide real-time tactical aerial ISR to combatant commanders using the MC-12W aircraft (a modified version of the Beechcraft 350). The aerial ISR provided the ability to "find, fix, and finish" the enemy - an important factor in the intelligence world of a counterinsurgent. The MC-12W planes are now transferred to JTF Thor. Project Perseus. After arriving in Iraq, the Project Perseus team commenced the performance of 34 flights, approximately 6 to 7 hours each, under the direction of Task Force ODIN, using a modified NP-3D aircraft from the US Navy's Scientific Development Squadron One (VXS-1).
