IBM's Weather Channel being sued by Los Angeles over claims its app deceived users into allowing their location to be tracked so it could sell the data
Lawsuit says the Weather Channel obtained and sold user data to third parties
Bombshell report claimed it and other apps collect user data without consent
A new lawsuit filed by the city of Los Angeles alleges the Weather Channel misled millions of users into allowing it to access their personal location data, then profiting off it in the process by selling it to third parties.
City Attorney Michael Feuer said Friday that users of the popular app are misled to think their location data will only be used for personalized forecasts and alerts.
The lawsuit follows a bombshell report last month that said the Weather Channel, GasBuddy and Weather Bug collect extensive data from users without their consent.
The Weather Channel app is the top app in the App Store's weather category and counts more than 100 million user downloads.
Feuer says The Weather Channel intentionally obscured its motives in a lengthy privacy policy that got four-fifths of users to agree to share geolocation data.
'For years, [The Weather Channel] has deceptively used its Weather Channel App to amass its users' private, personal geolocation data - tracking minute details about its users' locations throughout the day and night, all while leading users to believe that their data will only be used to provide them with "personalized local weather data, alerts and forecasts,' the lawsuit states.

Blood Pressure Meds Made in China and India Recalled for Containing Ingredient Used to Make Rocket Fuel
Dozens of blood pressure medicines have been recalled. The medications, containing an ingredient used to make rocket fuel, are the latest in the recent mass blood pressure drug exodus.
The recent recall that follows months of blood pressure drug recalls may be an ominous sign for modern medicine as the blood pressure and stroke medications are manufactured in China, notorious for its pollution. Two-thirds of the ingredients from the drugs originate in China, whereas the other third comes from India.
These are the blood pressure medications that are most affected by the recall.
The medications most affected by the recall are valsartan, valsartan, and hydrochlorothiazide tablets, and amlodipine and valsartan tablets. The UK reports a recall affecting irbesartan hydrochlorothiazide tablets made by Actavis pharmaceutical company.
ABC7 News reports on the latest recall:
Aurobindo Pharma USA, Inc., has issued another voluntary recall of medications used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure due to the possible presence of a cancer-causing substance in the pills.
The company said 80 lots are affected: two lots of Valsartan tablets, 26 lots of amlodipine and valsartan combination tablets, and 52 lots of valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) combination tablets.
Last year, ScieGen Pharmaceuticals, Inc and Aurobindo Pharma Limited of India had a simultaneous recall for Irbesartan along side due to contamination fears.
The FDA announced that the latest slew of blood pressure medicine recalls was “due to the detection of trace amounts of an unexpected impurity found in the finished drug product.”
The ingredient? A highly controversial contaminant that brings up many questions about the safety of modern medicine.
Why are the blood pressure drugs being recalled?
The medicines in question contain NDMA, once used to make rocket fuel and considered probably carcinogenic to humans according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer; and NDEA, still used in the manufacture of rocket fuel.
WebMD reports:
In each case, a recalled drug was contaminated with either N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) or N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA).
Both chemicals are believed to cause cancer in humans. Research also suggests NDEA can cause liver and blood cell damage.
NDEA is used to make rocket fuel and can also be found in some food and drinking water, but at low levels. It can also be a created through certain chemical reactions and as a byproduct of industrial processes.

Ann Coulter: Trump ‘Will Fold’ on Border Wall
Ann Coulter, perhaps the most vocal Trump supporter pushing for a wall on the southern border, said on Wednesday the president will cave on his demand for a wall.
In an interview with radio host Mark Simone, Coulter noted, “the president and I have had a little tiff.”
She continued: “For one thing, he actually did shut down the government — though don’t worry, he will fold in the end.”
Coulter decried the president last month after the senate passed a continuing resolution to stave off a government shutdown that didn’t allocate funding for a border wall. Trump reversed course shortly after, re-upping his demand for a border wall and sending the government into a partial shutdown that’s now on day 12.
Coulter added “the one person who deserves the most credit of all — for going ballistic when Trump caved on wall funding right before Christmas — which I think we got him to take back — is Matt Drudge. He was the one who put it up as the siren.”
“It just shows you how the media is so terrified of Drudge that they will not mention him,” she said, adding the media would rather focus on Fox News. “Fox was like three days behind the game.”
“He really does set the national agenda, as he did with this,” Coulter added of Drudge.
At the end of the interview, she turned back to Trump: “If he doesn’t build the wall, the next president will be a Democrat.”

Air Force Global Strike Command Chief Fired Over Unprofessional Relationship
A senior enlisted leader at the elite Air Force Global Strike Command has been removed from his position over an unprofessional relationship at his prior post.
Chief Master Sgt. Thomas B. Mazzone, command chief for AFGSC at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, was removed from his position Jan. 4 after a command-directed investigation determined he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship while in his previous position, service officials said in a release Friday.
"Based on the results of the investigation, the AFGSC commander, Gen. Timothy Ray, issued Chief Master Sgt. Mazzone appropriate administrative actions and removed him from the command chief position," the release said.
Before serving at Barksdale, Mazzone was the command chief of Air Force District of Washington at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, from April 2016 to December 2017, according to his official Air Force biography.
