"Dianne Feinstein is certainly on her game. In the past few days, she's given Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid a very public lesson in law and President-elect Barack Obama an equally public lesson in political manners.

I told her as much when she called me to make sure I was joining her in her box at Obama's swearing-in Jan. 20. She was in good spirits, and with good reason.

Her shot at Obama for leaking the name of Leon Panetta as the new CIA chief without giving her a call first was completely appropriate.

The leak was an egregious act, one that both Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden quickly acknowledged.

Her move may have upset California Democrats who adore Panetta, a former congressman from the Monterey area and Bill Clinton's ex-chief of staff. But as incoming chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, it was imperative that Feinstein establish her turf quickly - even with a friendly new administration. Continued..
