Room mates do wonders to attrition the cost of rent down. Unless if you are living in one of those per-person types of places. In which case, leave post haste.
Other than that, find better employ is about all I can say. Most skilled trades are going to get you at least $15 an hour just about anywhere. On a 40 hour work week, that is about $600 per before taxes. Many places offer higher than that, and here in many places throughout the midwest, we have a labor shortage. The county I am in has an unemployment rate of 4% and they are actually posting radio ads for skilled positions like electricians and engineers.
I was just talking with our shift manager the other night. Two of his temps showed up the first day and didn't come back. The work isn't all that hard - people just don't want to work and they either live with their parents or otherwise have a scenario where they don't really want to work. They need six more people for that shift and at the rate they are going, they are going to have to mill a hundred temps to get six, not counting for normal rates of attrition among hired employees.
The HR guy came blowing up my phone because of my Indeed resume and I almost forgot I applied months prior. 36 hours in 3 days with 4 days off is a pretty damned good deal to me. Gives me plenty of time to work on my own plans for making my own business. Or… Procrastinating while finding myself chasing rabbits.
What I am getting at is that there are jobs cropping up in many places. Fly-over territory is becoming productive territory.
