At this point, I think the DEMs just use "impeachment" and hearings alive to control the news cycle and continue to hamstring the president from gaining popularity. It's about the votes. There is no plan to vote on articles of impeachment, just talk talk talk. The press will amplify the issue, and can do that even while asking "is this wise?" Wise or not, the talk talk talk continues. No such thing as bad press.
Speculation is RR arranged the meeting to give RM an opportunity to get evidence of obstructive behavior or state of mind from Trump. RM left his cell phone behind, maybe as a surveillance technique to record what was said after the meeting concluded.
I think we can assume, with this slate of actors, that no meeting was arranged with clean hands, all meetings were an opportunity to manufacture evidence against Trump.

Yes, it is certainly possible that Trump was blind-sided by the appointment of a SC, and recognized RM as a formidable foe - another dirty cop (turned into cop/prosecutor) lined up to get him, just after he got rid of dirty cop Comey.
I think Sessions was blind-sided too.
