5 Weeks Since AL Passed Abortion Ban & Its Economy Is Bursting at the Seams

It was little more than a month ago in May when the Republican-led state of Alabama passed and signed into law what is arguably the nation’s toughest restrictions against abortion, and liberals could not have been more incensed at the pro-life measure.

There were numerous calls for a boycott of the state in retaliation by prominent Democrats and donors, as well as liberal activists in the entertainment and media industries.

Yet, it would appear that the proposed liberal boycott of Alabama was either never actually launched or had no measurable impact, as the state is flourishing economically.

In a media release on Friday from the Alabama Department of Labor, it was revealed that the state actually broke four employment records during the month of May, when the flurry of demands for an economic boycott of the state was in full swing.

As a result of the state’s improving economic situation, Alabama a record number of residents both in the labor force and actually employed, which coincide with a record-high number of jobs and a record-low unemployment rate.

“Since day one, my Administration has sought the best ways to make our state business-friendly for small businesses and attractive to world-class industry. It is certainly paying off because, in May, each of Alabama’s 67 counties saw their unemployment rates drop,” Republican Gov. Kay Ivey said in a statement.

“Alabama is breaking record after record! I am proud of the footing we are making; however, we will not tire our efforts. It remains our goal to ensure every Alabamian who wants a job can get a job.”

Parents of ‘Jihadi Jack’ Found Guilty of Funding Terrorism

BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

June 21, 2019 Updated: June 21, 2019

LONDON—A couple from Oxford whose son converted to Islam and traveled to Syria to support the ISIS terrorist group were found guilty on June 21 and given suspended sentences for trying to send him money.

Organic farmer John Letts, 58, and ex-Oxfam fundraiser Sally Lane, 56, said they were acting as any parents would have when they tried to send their 23-year-old son cash when he begged for help from another country. They say they believed their son, Jack Letts, was in mortal danger and trapped in Raqqa, Syria.

“We tried to do the right thing,” the couple said in a statement. “We fully cooperated with the police and asked them repeatedly for help.”

Prosecutor Alison Morgan says the couple “turned a blind eye to the obvious”—that Jack Letts had traveled to the Middle East and become an extremist. Authorities say the couple had been warned not to send money at risk of prosecution, but chose to ignore the advice.

The couple sent—or tried to send—1,723 pounds ($2,188) to their son, who has been dubbed Jihadi Jack by the British media. The jury deliberated for nearly 20 hours before finding them guilty of one charge of funding terrorism.

Judge Nicholas Hilliard sentenced the pair to 15 months’ imprisonment but suspended the sentence for 12 months because of the “very special circumstances of this case.”

“It was one thing for parents to be optimistic about their children and I do acknowledge he is your son, who you love very much,” he said. “But in this context, you did lose sight of realities.”
