US Sanctions Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, Blocks All US Assets

The Trump administration took the bizarre step of imposing financial sanctions on Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif despite indications the man has no wealth or properties to speak of parked in the United States.

The sanctions revealed Wednesday will freeze any assets Zarif has in the United States, or which are controlled by U.S. entities, said the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

The Treasury Department said "all property and interests in property of this individual (Zarif) that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons must be blocked and reported" to the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin alleged Zarif "implements the reckless agenda of Iran's Supreme Leader, and is the regime's primary spokesperson around the world."

"The United States is sending a clear message to the Iranian regime that its recent behavior is completely unacceptable," he added.

Zarif expressed bewilderment at the sanctions, saying he has "no property or interests outside of Iran.”

Swedish news agency TT said Trump sent the U.S. special presidential envoy for hostage affairs to Stockholm to monitor the court proceedings and to show support for Mayers.

Fire breaks out at Weld County oil and gas site, one person dies at the scene

A fire broke out at an oil and gas site in Weld County on Wednesday and one person died in the incident.

Firefighters were called at about 6:30 p.m. to a site near Weld County roads 66 and 23, said Fire Chief Kris Kazian of Windsor Severance Fire Rescue.

When firefighters arrived, flames were rising from the top of an oil tank, Kazian said. A work truck was in the area, but no one was with the truck.

Firefighters accessed the top of the oil tank and found a man who was unresponsive, Kazian said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by the Weld County Coroner’s Office.

U.S. Navy Secretary Richard Spencer on Wednesday revoked awards given to several military prosecutors in the court-martial of a Navy SEAL who was acquitted of murdering an Iraqi prisoner but convicted of unlawfully posing for photos with his dead body.

A total of 10 military awards - seven Navy Achievement Medals and three letters of commendation - recently given to military prosecutors for their work on the Gallagher case were revoked, Navy officials told Reuters. Those officials said they did not know if Spencer acted on Trump's orders or took action before the president's tweets.
