The publishers conceded in a statement that the surviving minister, Barend du Plessis, could have been erroneously linked to the book.

Before his death, Mark Minnie was ‘determined to reveal further evidence’ about the alleged paedophilia ring involving prominent National Party cabinet ministers revealed in his new book The Lost Boys of Bird Island, according to his publisher Tafelberg.
The Lost Boys of Bird Island, co-authored by Minnie and Chris Steyn, names three former National Party ministers, including Magnus Malan, as central figures in the systematic abuse, rape and possible murder of a number of children, most of them vulnerable and black, during apartheid.
Minnie was found dead on Tuesday morning, one week after the release of the book. His body was found near Port Elizabeth.
In a statement, Tafelberg said it had last had contact with Minnie was on Sunday night, but that he had been out of reach since Monday morning. His cellphone had been switched off and he hadn’t responded to emails.

As part of an international probe into child-sex and pornography, a computer engineer was arrested in 2015, causing an inquiry that eventually brought this book.
In the foreword, Marianne Thamm says previous exposures in South Africa seldom made headlines, because of the secrecy of the crimes, and because the predatory adults were often in powerful or respected positions. In 1986/87 an allegation against three Cabinet ministers suspected of abusing boys briefly surfaced, then disappeared.
At that time there was vicious intimidation of journalists, editors and political opponents, and also political assassinations by death squads. Conversely, disinformation could be used to discredit government officials. The authors, former narcotics detective Mark Minnie and investigative journalist Chris Steyn, spent much time investigating the case independently of each other. Thirty years later, their narratives have been brought together – by the publisher Tafelberg - in this explosive expose.
The pair convincingly claim they have finally ripped the veil off the horrendous story of official complicity in the criminal abuse, rape and possible murder of children, mainly black and drug-dependent , who were frequently taken to Bird Island off Port Elizabeth by helicopter (sometimes military) to “entertain” men of power.
Minnie tells his story first in direct, salty language, and includes incidents from his tough personal life in Port Elizabeth, including having been raped by two teens as a boy – possibly explaining his tenacity in pursuing perpetrators. An agitated boy tells Minnie his brother is in hospital with internal injuries suffered in a sexual assault.
Investigation reveals that boys, addicted to alcohol and dagga, hang around venues popular with paedophiles. Then follows the sensational information that boys are flown to Bird Island by helicopter to pleasure men of obvious wealth or connections. It transpires that one particularly sadistic man is known to the boys as ‘Ore’, because of his prominent ears, and Minnie dubs him ‘Wingnut’.
The boys identify “Uncle” Dave Allen, charismatic Bird Island guano concession millionaire, deep sea diver and police reservist. A search of Allen’s home by Minnie reveals a hidden compartment in a cupboard, packed with child pornography. Arrested for statutory rape, he confesses. Not wishing to take the blame alone, he names three cabinet ministers – “one the second most powerful man in the country”.
But before he can turn state witness, he is found shot in the forehead. There are no powder burns. Steyn then writes that Minister of Environmental Affairs John Wiley, who for 10 years had a close relationship with Allen, is shortly afterwards an apparent shooting suicide. The death room must have been locked from the outside, as the key was missing, and notes had been hurriedly burned in the driveway.
A National Party source told Steyn that Wiley had faced blackmail several times because of his sexual orientation, and Allen had also been blackmailed. The case was muddied further when a military counter-intelligence source told Steyn that the Minister of Defence and head of the all-powerful Security Council, Magnus Malan, was the first person to enter Wiley’s room after the suicide. A close friend of Wiley for many years, Malan personally “swept” the house, then left with two boxes of effects.
A blatant cover-up by a senior State prosecutor quashes Minnie’s investigation by ordering that it be shelved, and Steyn’s piece on Wiley is virtually spiked by The Cape Times.

By now, Minnie has uncovered the infamous incident of the boy who was shot in the anus. He had been delivered by military helicopter to a whites-only hospital by three men in suits. No hospital records are kept, a nurse friend tells Minnie of utmost secrecy, and the elderly matron is given a sum of R10 000 and transferred, tearful and scared.
“High-ranking Pretoria” then demand and confiscate Minnie’s docket, and he is transferred from PE to the Soweto Riot Squad – a really dangerous job. A bullet through his windscreen, and his car going up in flames on being started by his girlfriend, show the evil intentions of what Minnie suspects is the covert and murderous Civil Co-operation Bureau.
The case was seen as a real threat to National Party election prospects at a time when the party was starting to implode, and the opposition was growing stronger.
The Bird Island fishing trips by the three ministers have been defended, and there are character references from people who knew Wiley. The name of the third ex-minister implicated, then a senior member of cabinet and touted to succeed PW Botha, has been omitted on legal advice.
You will form your own conclusions, but there is surely enough circumstantial and victims’ evidence to be convinced that his book is an honest account of a truly diabolical episode in some of the darkest days of our country’s history.

Late former Port Elizabeth businessman and Sacramento Salvage Diver, Dave Allen, was also named in the book.
Both Allen and Wiley committed suicide in 1987 while Malan died in 2011. The surviving Minister is said to have a holiday home in the Eastern Cape.
According to City Press, quoting from extracts from the book, one of the boys was seriously injured when a gun was allegedly shoved up his anus and a shot fired. The book details how the boy was taken to a formerly “whites only” hospital for treatment.
The book claims that Malan had commandeered air force helicopters to take him, friends and the children to Bird Island.
John W. E. Wiley, minister of environmental affairs and tourism in President PW Botha’s Cabinet, was found dead at his home outside Cape Town on Sunday 29 March 1987, an apparent suicide.
Wiley, 60, was found on his bed with a bullet wound in his right temple and a .32-caliber pistol at his side, according to the police, who said that “no crime is suspected” but that their investigation will continue.
A lawyer and businessman, Wiley became a deputy minister in 1982 and the minister of environmental affairs in 1984, bringing considerable expertise to the Cabinet.
A big, powerful, handsome man, Wiley, at 60, was still an active yachtsman, tennis player, socialite and gallant. The Hollywood actress Linda Christian, who had been married to Tyrone Power among others, called Wiley the most attractive man she had ever met.
The day after Wiley’s death, the Cape Times printed a story that put into motion two highly sensational rumours, neither of which has any foundation in proof, as to why Wiley died. The article showed that Wiley had been the acquaintance, perhaps the ‘very close friend’, of a Port Elizabeth businessman, David Allen, who shot himself one month earlier.
It so happened that Allen’s business interests lay in the sphere of Wiley’s work as minister of the environment. He had the concession for guano on Bird Island, off Port Elizabeth, as well as the franchise to breed oysters and mussels for sale to the Far East. In his capacity as a minister, Wiley had visited Allen’s commercial establishments.
The Cape Times story of disclosed that Allen had shot himself on the beach at Port Elizabeth, two hours before he was due to appear in court on an unspecified charge.
Six days later, the Sunday newspapers printed what had by then become well known by rumour, that Allen was charged with acts of indecency against young boys.
Sad as fek that she actually believed for one second that a real investigation was coming….

Presidential hopeful Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma met self-confessed tobacco smuggler Adriano Mazzotti and his business associates more than the one time he claims he met her - and here's the proof.
Instagram photographs prove at least two meetings, while a third shows an associate of the dodgy tycoon embracing Dlamini-Zuma, apparently taken in Greece. The others show Mazzotti and Dlamini-Zuma in London and in Sandton.

Schabir Shaik “finally free” after being pardoned by Ramaphosa
Schabir Shaik thanked Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday for being “finally free”.
Shaik, convicted fraudster and ex-pres. Jacob Zuma’s financial advisor has been in house arrest from March 2009 until February this year because he is alleged to be terminally ill. He celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr again as a free man earlier this month after the month-long Ramadan.
He was jailed for 15 years in 2005 for fraud and corruption for his share in the arms scandal. He served two years and four months before parole was granted to him
He has now been cleared of the rest of his sentence after Ramaphosa pardoned 14,500 offenders in December as part of Reconciliation Day celebrations.
Shaik spoke the words of Rev. Martin Luther King used and said, “Free at last, I am free at last, thank God I am free at last.”
He thanked Ramaphosa and said he was grateful and relieved that he was eligible.
“Now I can return to a normal life. I’m going to try to lead a life of simplicity, ”he says.
“Integration after 15 years is not easy. The mental retardation is worse than the physical retardation. It took its toll. But I am very grateful. That’s all I can say – and I feel blessed.

There have been credible reports of talks between the Zambian government and China on handing over the country’s national electricity company, ZESCO to the Chinese due to the inability of Zambia to meet its loan repayment promises. This is expected as China is already in control of the country’s broadcasting company, ZNBC. There are also fears the main airport in Lusaka could be the next target.
Obliviously, Zambia is in trouble. And for other African beneficiaries of Chinese loans, they should prepare for the same possibility in the eventuality that they aren’t able to repay China.
Debt Acceleration was the Plan
China is smart and deliberate about its policy in Africa. It understands the development deficit on the continent and it is strategically using this to keep Africa’s economic future under its arms.
Africa has what China needs to further propel its economy, specifically crude oil and copper. The best way to ensure an abundant supply of these in the future would be to make the depository countries owe it, which it has excellently done so far.
The play is simple. Give staggering loans to inept leaders and keep the details of repayment from the prying eyes of the public. Eventually, if debtors are unable to service their debts, China takes over its collateral which is mostly in national assets. But this does not comprehend the severity of the situation Africa finds itself.

WhatsApp messages show how VBS payments flowed to trusts linked to Malema, Shivambu - report
A series of WhatsApps uncovered by Scorpio reveal a pattern of VBS Mutual Bank money channelled to EFF leaders Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu.
Both Malema and Shivambu previously denied they ever benefitted from the looting at VBS, but never challenged the accusations in court.
A report estimated that nearly R2 billion was looted from the bank, benefitting more than 50 people.
A WhatsApp discussion between former VBS Mutual Bank chair Tshifhiwa Matodzi and former VBS treasurer Phophi Mukhodobwane suggests a close relationship between Matodzi and EFF leaders Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu, an investigation by Scorpio has revealed.
Scorpio previously revealed that Malema and Shivambu were beneficiaries of millions of VBS money that was paid to Sgameka Projects – a company owned by Shivambu's brother Brian.
Malema has in the past claimed that the EFF never received VBS money and Shivambu accused Scorpio journalist Pauli van Wyk of "dubious agendas".

In 2018, advocate Terry Motau released his report, titled The Great Bank Heist, into fraud and corruption at VBS, compiled with Werksmans Attorneys. It estimated that nearly R2 billion was looted from the bank. More than 50 people benefitted, News24 reported.
The report revealed that Brian Shivambu received R16 million from the now collapsed VBS Mutual Bank. While Shivambu claimed he was paid for work done as a consultant through his company Vele Investments, Sgameka Projects had no invoices for any work done, paid no tax, employees or any other operating costs, according to Scorpio. The company's sole source of income was VBS.
The WhatsApp messages uncovered by Scorpio, published on Sunday by Daily Maverick, reportedly reveal that Matodzi instructed former VBS treasurer Phophi Mukhodobwane to deposit R5 million into Sgameka Projects' bank account.
