Matagorda County reports first coronavirus death in Texas
A Texas man in his late 90s died Sunday before officials confirmed on Monday he had tested positive for the new coronavirus. He was the first person in the state to die of the illness.
The man died at Matagorda Regional Medical Center, about 80 miles southwest of Houston, according to the Matagorda County Emergency Operation Center. He was a resident of the county.
The Houston Department of Health and Human Services notified hospital officials at 6:15 p.m. on Monday that the man had tested positive for COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus.
State officials have launched an extensive investigation into the case and whether it is linked to a second positive case reported earlier in the month, Matagorda County officials said.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family,” the emergency operations center wrote on Facebook.
