ICE HSI arrests former Louisiana deputy, firefighter for child exploitation

NEW ORLEANS – A former Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy and a Lafourche Parish Fire

Department volunteer firefighter were arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New Orleans May 20 on child exploitation charges.

Former deputy Phillip Guidry, 35, of Houma was dismissed from his position following his arrest by HSI on 20 counts of possession of child pornography involving juveniles under the age of 13.

The arrest was a result of a joint investigation by HSI Houma, the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation Cyber Crime Unit, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office. Guidry was booked into the Terrebonne Parish Jail following his arrest.

“Working alongside our law enforcement partners, Homeland Security Investigations is deeply committed to protecting our children and communities from these horrific crimes of exploitation,” said Jere T. Miles, special agent in charge of HSI New Orleans. “Those who betray their position of trust are no exceptions.”

Volunteer firefighter William Michael Chiasson, 47, of Thibodaux, was arrested on 60 counts of possession of child pornography involving juveniles under the age of 13. He was booked into the Lafourche Parish Jail.

This investigation was conducted under HSI’s Operation Predator, an international initiative to protect children from sexual predators. Since the launch of Operation Predator in 2003, HSI has arrested more than 19,000 individuals for crimes against children, including the production and distribution of online child exploitation material, traveling overseas for sex with minors, and sex trafficking of children.

Weekly Jobless Claims Add Another 2.1 Million, Revised First Quarter GDP -5%…

The Dept. of Labor released weekly unemployment data showing an additional 2.1 million workers filed new unemployment compensation claims last week; bringing the total claims to over 40 million since the Wuhan virus mitigation effort shut down the U.S. economy.

However, there is some good news within the data. The “continuing claims”, meaning those who have been collecting unemployment compensation for at least two weeks, is now at 21 million. That’s a drop of almost four million from the prior week and signals that jobs are returning as the state economies begin reopening.

Additionally, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released the second estimate of the first quarter Gross Domestic Product. The estimate moved the prior contraction of -4.8 percent slightly lower to a newly revised estimate of -5.0 percent.

With the first quarter at -5.0 percent (Jan, Feb, March) and a guaranteed much larger contraction in the second quarter (April, May, June) it is now a certainty we will officially be labeled “in a recession” when the Q2 numbers are released on the last Friday of July. The media is using the data lag to narrate, and drag-out discussion of negative economic news, as long as possible.

There are some indicators the rebound will be strong (home sales, housing starts, mortgage applications, consumer confidence) but the key to both a wide and deep recovery is putting people back to work as quickly as possible.

(CNBC) First-time claims for unemployment benefits totaled 2.1 million last week, the lowest total since the coronavirus crisis began though indicative that a historically high number of Americans remain separated from their jobs.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for 2.05 million. The total represented a decrease of 323,000 from the previous week’s upwardly revised 2.438 million. (read more)

Doctors Demand Hospital Industry Stop Funding Dark Money Lobby Group

Progressive physicians are pressing the American Hospital Association to support patients and healthcare workers during the pandemic instead of wasting money on a lobby group that opposes universal coverage, Jake Johnson reports.

A progressive organization of 23,000 physicians from across the U.S. demanded last week that the American Hospital Association (AHA) divest completely from a dark-money lobbying group that has spent millions combating Medicare for All and instead devote those financial resources to the fight against Covid-19 and to better support for patients and healthcare workers.

Dr. Adam Gaffney, president of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), said in a statement that “the Covid-19 pandemic has stretched hospitals’ resources to the limit, and the AHA should not waste precious member hospitals’ funds lobbying against universal health coverage” as a member of the Partnership for America’s Health Care Future (PFAHCF).

Because Medicare for All would provide a lifeline to hospitals in underserved areas that have been hit hard by Covid-19, Gaffney argued, the AHA “cannot claim to represent hospitals while also opposing a single-payer system that would keep struggling hospitals open.” The AHA represents around 5,000 hospitals and other healthcare providers in the U.S.

As Common Dreams reported earlier this month, public health officials are accusing the Trump administration of directing billions of dollars in Covid-19 hospital bailout funds to high-revenue providers while restricting money to hospitals that serve low-income areas.

Tenet Healthcare, an investor-owned hospital company that has donated hundreds of thousands to PFAHCF, has received $345 million in Covid-19 bailout funds, Axios reported last month.

“The AHA should immediately leave the PFAHCF,” Gaffney said, “and redirect that money to supporting patients and frontline healthcare workers.”

“As physicians, we can no longer tolerate a health system that puts profits ahead of patients and public health,” Gaffney added. “It’s time for health professionals to hold accountable the organizations that claim to represent us.”

Formed in the summer of 2018 by an alliance of pharmaceutical, insurance, and hospital lobbyists with the goal of countering the push for universal healthcare, PFAHCF’s anti-Medicare for All “army” has grown rapidly since its founding, with the AHA joining the fray in 2019.

As The Intercept reported last October, the for-profit hospital industry has played an “integral role” in the corporate fight against single-payer.

New rules making healthy people self-isolate could ‘quickly’ become mandatory: UK health minister

Self-isolation ‘will be voluntary at first…, but we can quickly make it mandatory if that's what it takes,’ says Matt Hancock.

The U.K.’s senior health minister has said a new “test and trace” system which will tell healthy people to quarantine for 14 days if they have been in close contact with someone who tests positive for the coronavirus, could “quickly” become “mandatory.”

Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, made the remarks at yesterday’s daily coronavirus press briefing.

“The instructions to people are clear,” Hancock said.

“If you get symptoms, isolate immediately and get a test. If you are contacted by NHS tests and trace instructing you to isolate you must – it is your civic duty so you avoid unknowingly spreading the virus and you help to break the chain of transmission,” he continued.

“This will be voluntary at first because we trust everyone to do the right thing, but we can quickly make it mandatory if that's what it takes.”

Hancock warned the British public that “if we don't collectively make this work, then the only way forward is to keep the lockdown.”

Hancock repeated the possibility of the system becoming mandatory in an interview this morning on Sky News, saying that “there are powers that we took through parliament at the start of the crisis in the Coronavirus Act to be able to mandate this.”

People who test positive for the coronavirus will be interviewed by members of what is being widely described as an “army of 25,000 contact tracers” in order to learn of other people who they have been in close contact with.

The contact tracers will then inform those people of the need to stay at home. The NHS website explains that people who are told that they’ve been in contact with a person who has coronavirus must self-isolate for 14 days and not leave home for any reason. “If you need food or medicine, order it online or by phone, or ask friends and family to drop it off at your home,” the website says.

Anyone who lives with someone who tests positive for the coronavirus must automatically self-isolate for 14 days. But individuals living with people who have been told to self-isolate because they have been in contact with someone else who has coronavirus, do not need to self-isolate if they do not have symptoms.

Baroness Dido Harding, executive chairwoman of NHS Test and Trace, explained that “close contact” means “members of your household, or someone you've been in two meters of for more than 15 minutes.”

Harding said that Britons need to follow instructions from the NHS to self-isolate for 14 days “even if you don't have symptoms or you feel perfectly well.”

The U.K. is also in the process of developing a coronavirus tracking app which is expected to launch nationwide in June. The app is currently on trial in the Isle of Wight and uses bluetooth signals on smartphones to monitor who people have been in close contact with in the past 28 days. According to reports, messages will be sent to people asking them to self-isolate if they have been in close contact with individuals who test positive for the coronavirus.

Department of Education: Transgender Athletes’ Competition Violates Women’s Rights

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut policy that allows transgender athletes to compete as girls in high school sports violates the civil rights of athletes who have always identified as female, according to a letter from the U.S. Education Department’s civil rights office that was obtained Thursday by The Associated Press.

The letter came in response to a complaint filed last year by several cisgender female track athletes who argued that two transgender female runners had an unfair physical advantage.

The office said in the 45-page letter that it may seek to withhold federal funding over the policy, which allows athletes to participate under the gender with which they identify. The policy is a violation of Title IX, the federal civil rights law that guarantees equal education opportunities for women, including in athletics, the office said.

It has “denied female student-athletes athletic benefits and opportunities, including advancing to the finals in events, higher level competitions, awards, medals, recognition, and the possibility of greater visibility to colleges and other benefits,” according to the letter, which is dated May 15.

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference has said its policy is designed to comply with a state law barring schools from discriminating against transgender students. The conference did not immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday.

Attorneys for the Alliance Defending Freedom, who represent the girls who brought the complaint, said they would comment later Thursday.

The decision by the civil rights office names the conference, along with the school districts for which the transgender runners and those filing the complaint competed — Glastonbury, Bloomfield, Hartford, Cromwell, Canton and Danbury.

The office said it will “either initiate administrative proceedings to suspend, terminate, or refuse to grant or continue and defer financial assistance” to the conference and those districts or refer the cases to the U.S. Department of Justice.

In its letter, the civil rights office said it notified the CIAC and the school districts of its pending decision in February, but that subsequent negotiations failed to result in an agreement over the policy.

“All that today’s finding represents is yet another attack from the Trump administration on transgender students,” said Chase Strangio, deputy director of the funding initiative Trans Justice.

“Trans students belong in our schools, including on sports teams, and we aren’t backing down from this fight,” Strangio said.

Travel Industry Giants Urge UK Government to Drop Two-Week Quarantine for Arrivals

Business leaders in the United Kingdom are growing increasingly frustrated with the government's reluctance to reopen sectors of the economy amid the coronavirus pandemic. As analysts warn of a looming recession, the travel industry has announced its opposition to a two-week mandatory quarantine for all arrivals from abroad.

Travel and tourist industry leaders wrote a letter to the British government on Wednesday, calling for an end to the "unworkable" and "damaging" 14-day quarantine policy on international arrivals to the UK.

The letter to Home Secretary Priti Patel, signed by 78 bosses of hotels and travel firms, said that quarantine is the "very last thing" the country needs as economic prospects amid the coronavirus lockdown look increasingly dire.

George Morgan-Grenville, the CEO of Red Savannah Ltd, who headed the appeal commended the government for its response to the pandemic but warned that a recession is now a "high probability".

"The economic cost of the government’s action is yet to be seen, but the early indicators paint a grim picture with Q1 GDP contracting by 2% (despite only seven days of lockdown), and Q2 likely to be considerably higher at 20% with possibly a 12% contraction for the 2020 fiscal year", the letter warned.

Now that the pandemic is "on the retreat", the message cautioned that the travel industry cannot rapidly "scale down" its workforce and must maintain staff "to either cancel, or rearrange existing, often complex, bookings".

The signatories demanded consideration of the "air-bridges" proposal by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, which would see bilateral travel arrangements between countries with similar Covid-19 infection rates.

This comes as the United Kingdom looks to loosen many of its initial lockdown measures imposed since the beginning of March, designed to enforce social distancing measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Criticism has been levelled against the government for its alleged belated introduction of quarantine for foreign arrivals. Labour's Shadow Health Secretary John Ashworth, asked last week why the policy was not introduced sooner when coronavirus cases were lower.

"I would urge the government to get on with it and give us the details about how it's going to work in practice", Ashworth said.

Airlines have warned that the quarantine measures will pose a threat to their already critical financial situation. In a letter to the Prime Minister on 12 May, a group of aviation executives warned that the policy would make the industry "unable to compete"

Growing dissatisfaction among UK business leaders may soon see the government put into the problematic position of having to weigh the economic damage of the lockdown against the human cost of a potential second spike in coronavirus cases.

Twitter claims 'no evidence' of mail-in voter fraud despite numerous convictions since 2016==

Around three dozen criminal convictions for absentee ballot fraud over past four years tallied in Heritage Foundation database.

Twitter this week slapped a warning label on some of Donald Trump's tweets for the first time, cautioning users that the president's "series of claims about potential voter fraud" were "unsubstantiated," citing "CNN, Washington Post and others" for authority. "Experts say mail-in ballots are very rarely linked to voter fraud," Twitter declared.

In an accompanying "What you need to know" list, the social media giant added that "fact checkers say there is no evidence that mail-in ballots are linked to voter fraud."

In fact, there have been numerous cases of mail-in voter fraud scattered widely across the country over the past four years, evidence that the absentee ballot system is open to at least some voter manipulation, even as many experts and pundits continue to insist otherwise.

According to data compiled by the Heritage Foundation, there have been around three dozen criminal convictions for absentee ballot fraud over the past four years, and those cases are but a small subset of over 200 convictions for various types of voter fraud the conservative organization says have occurred since 2016.

In one case from 2016, Indiana police officer Lowell Colen was convicted of absentee ballot fraud in an attempt to help his father win a city council election. Colen eventually pled guilty to four felony counts of voter fraud, with prosecutors claiming he filled out false registrations and forged numerous signatures.

In 2018, authorities arrested Florida man Bret Warren after they determined he had stolen five absentee ballots and fraudulently voted with them. Warren eventually pled no contest to two charges of false swearing in connection with voting.

Last year, former Gordon, Alabama mayor Elbert Melton was convicted of absentee ballot fraud in a mayoral race he won by just 16 votes.

In 2018, New Mexico authorities indicted Laura Seeds on 13 counts of voter fraud related to her husband's 2016 mayoral race. Seeds was eventually convicted in part for illegally possessing two absentee voter ballots; her husband Robert won the race by two votes.

DNA Damage, Brain Cancer: 513 Doctors and 900 Belgian Health Professionals Sound Alarm on 5G

This is from Avaat.org and is further evidence that it is not just fringe groups that are concerned about the effects of 5G.

The following is a letter signed by 434 Belgian doctors and 900 health professionals.

See also: http://www.avaate.org/spip.php?article2845

Here is their letter:

Faced with the massive and reckless deployment of wireless technologies, we, health professionals, ask the government to enforce the precautionary principle in order to protect the population and more particularly the most vulnerable groups, including pregnant women. and children.

In the midst of a pandemic, while citizens are confined and society is under severe strain, Proximus started on March 31 the deployment of the future 5G in 30 municipalities around Brussels.

Even if it could be a simple coincidence, this seems indecent to us at a time when the Belgians must fight together to try to overcome the human drama that concerns us all. At the same time, consumer organizations have been quick to publish articles claiming that the technology is not dangerous.

The exposure of the population to electromagnetic radio frequency / microwave (RF / MO) radiation has been increasing over the past decades. Wireless home phones (DECT), smartphones, tablets in 3G then 4G, Wi-Fi at home, at work, in nurseries, schools, transport and public places…

And now we are witnessing the arrival of 5G or at least 4G +.

However, the safety of this exposure has never been demonstrated. On the contrary, evidence of its harmfulness is accumulating. Since 2011, moreover, electromagnetic RF / MO radiation from wireless technologies has been considered by the WHO as possibly carcinogenic (class 2B), largely because of the increased risks of gliomas and acoustic neuromas among long-term users. cell phone date.

The Precautionary Principle was in no way respected during the massive deployment of these wireless technologies.

However, when serious and possibly irreversible risks have been identified, the lack of certainty should not be used as a pretext to postpone measures to protect the environment and health.

We have reviewed the independent scientific literature and we refer, among other things, to Resolution 1815 of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Our conclusions agree with those of independent specialists, and are that the precautionary principle is currently not applied and that the protection of the health of citizens, and children in particular, is not ensured in the face of overexposure to these electromagnetic radiation. RF / MO.

The standards intended to protect the population from exposure to electromagnetic radiation RF / MO only take into account the heating of tissues (thermal effect) during an exposure of limited duration.

These standards do not take into account repeated and / or prolonged exposures, or any non-thermal biological effects which occur at values significantly lower than the values currently authorized. They were not designed to protect fetuses, children, adolescents, the elderly, etc.

For children, the risks may be increased due to the cumulative effects of prolonged exposure. Their brains, organs and developing and immature tissues may be more sensitive to exposure. And the rays penetrate proportionally more deeply into their organs than into those of adults since their dimensions are smaller.

The widespread deployment of wireless technologies has known health risks for several decades.
