Imagine there's two paths:

Path 1. Surely humankind becomes more peaceful and eventually joins a greater "interstellar community", something like the utopia thought of in Star Trek. In a half century we could be totally transformed into something unrecognizable to this. How unrealistic is it that we develop time travel along the way and troubleshoot to make sure our history is optimal?

Path 2. Annihilation. Certain elites have underground cities where they rule over separated populations, conditioned and genetically tampered with, underground for generations. Eventually these people join a colony on mars and integrate into a technocratic, communist nightmare where everyone is chipped, raised in dormitories and you don't even know in youth if you're a clone or not. There's no freedom, love is illegal and defined as neurotic hyper-attachment. A pervasive A.I. can speak directly to you in your head, creating voices in your mind that sound like your own. It also can review your thoughts at all times.

What if both of these futures were in competition over the present? What would a temporal conflict look like? Would it create successive anomalies e.g. Mandela effect?
