Before them the catholic church used it because it has been extremely expensive to produce. BTW:
"humble" black has been one of the most expensive dyes to achieve in former times. The church had always had a thing for expensive things, it seems.
Royal color are all colors that are intensive and look like precious jewels or metals. Intensive colors, purple, magenta, ultramarin blue and deep black that doesn't fade out had been the most expensive colors and dyes to produce.
"Royal" is what is expensive/ rare.
