>define corruption

Corruption - dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.

Iris Weinshall resigned from being NYC DOT Commissioner in April 2007 after serving 8 years. She was commissioner during the 2003 Staten Island Ferry Crash in which eleven people died and 71 others injured. The crash was at first said by New York City to be an Act of God, with attorneys arguing that the Department of Transportation should not be held responsible for the crash, an argument that disturbed many survivors and New York City residents.

The responsibility of DOT is:

  • Provide safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of pedestrians, goods, and vehicular traffic on the streets, highways, bridges, and waterways of the City's transportation network;

  • Improve traffic mobility and reduce congestion throughout the City;

  • Rehabilitate and maintain the City's infrastructure, including bridges, tunnels, streets, sidewalks, and highways;

  • Encourage the use of mass transit and sustainable modes of transportation; and

  • Conduct traffic safety educational programs.
