Iridium is a "switching in the sky" satellite system that handles calls independent from any terrestrial phone system until the last link down or up. It either went bankrupt or nearly went bankrupt and the CIA stepped in with a sweetheart contract that allowed it to become profitable and attract investors, including Soros. The CIA could not afford Iridium to disappear.
