Pindar was an Archaic Greek lyric poet. He isn't very well known today, but he used to be considered one of the greats, the greatest even. And it's not like he has really gone down in esteem; his readership has merely declined with the changing times.
This is absolutely relevant. You see, in "My favorite author is X", having X = Pindar is very likely the value that gives out the most elitism points. To properly appreciate Pindar you need to become very fluent in a dead language, learn about Greek history and mythology, and be able to appreciate dense intricate poetry in the first place. Pindar is also elitist in that the poems espouse elitists ideas and speak dismissively about the "brute masses".
It is easy to see how someone in need of coming up with an alias and wanting to come off as the most superior type of human would have chosen to be called Pindar.
The dragon-themed attempts at explaining the name are silly.
