I agree, if Romney were "their guy" he would have won. I don't think there's any way that he would ever win or even come close, after President Trump changed the playing field so drastically. Romney's got baggage, which crippled him in the past, and those flaws would only be magnified now that social media, which barely existed when Romney ran before, is now hotter than ever.
