There was a strong tradition in the Byzantine empire to use eunuchs in many roles of power– the reason being that custom did not allow castrated men to assume the diadem, and so they could be trusted not to backstab the emperor in a bid for power. It was considered a perfectly valid option to castrate one of your sons and send him off to a career in government.

 

History seems to repeat itself in weird ways.
