If anyone's up for a (phenomenal) 500-page book, The Ordeal of Otto Otepka tells the story of a humble FBI agent who rose to oversee all government security clearances (most relevantly, in the state department) under Eisenhower, then Kennedy.
Kennedy got elected through a maze of favors that were quickly called in by such infiltrators/subversives as (((Dean Rusk))) and (((Walt Rostow))).
Otepka remained stalwart, a true patriot, until he was stripped of his position, and the flood of communists into the state department was unleashed.
I cannot recommend this book enough.
McCarthy did nothing wrong.
