Ultimately, prayer is talking to God. Jesus in what's become known as the Lord's Prayer gives us a "pattern" to use as to how. While reciting verbatim is ok "as long as the mind is engaged, and you're not just pressing a mental play button". An example of how you might pray following the pattern is this:
Father in Heaven, blessed be your name amongst all names. For You and You only are the true God; the creator of the universe. All else are flawed idols and creations of sinful men.
I ask for and look forward to the coming of your kingdom; the fulfillment and culmination of all things as you have told us – the eternal Jerusalem, where the saints will rejoice and worship You for ever and ever.
Your will be done on earth as your will is done perfectly in the heavens. I ask that
… "personal requests", I know and trust that You, who know all things, and can do all things, will do what is right with my requests.
I thank you that you have provided for all my needs to this day, and that I ask that you continue to do so; that I keep in mind that all I have comes, great or small, from you and that I rely on your grace and mercy.
Lord God, I have sinned against you, I have … "personal admissions of sin", I ask you to forgive me as you have promised, that you are faithful and just and will cleanse me from all unrighteousness. You have been so kind, knowing who I am, and all I have done, and will do, that You love me so much that still forgive me. Thank you for Christ’s gift on the cross, that because of what You did, that these can be paid for.
Help me to forgive … "person who has wronged me in such and such a way". Help me to be merciful in forgiving them as You have me.
Help me to flee temptations, and when I cannot flee, to stand by Your strength that I might not sin against you.
Though the world be filled with evil, deliver me, I pray, protect and preserve me by Your hand.
Yours is the Kingdom and all power, and glorify Yourself, for you alone are worthy of all honor and praise.
