I personally go out of my way to be kind just to stick a big middle finger to the darkness. Separating people into groups makes it easier to hate "them", because they no longer represent an actual person. It's subtle poison. By throwing last ditch efforts of kindness, especially when I really don't want to, I often find that a moment of eye contact, or sincere appreciation, will heal my soul- even if but a moment. Then I can come here and keep fighting.
