It tests for viral overload. Positive only means that someone is currently or has recently fought a viral infection. Of any type. Therefore the covid (common cold virus) is detected as a false positive at a rate of 96%. Lots of various types of viruses exist that aren't the cold virus. PCR doesn't specify which virus or if it is even a current infection.
