Oprah recently decked the halls of her Montecito home in time for her annual holiday gathering. She's celebrating Christmas alongside Stedman, her daughter-girls, and her best friend Gayle and her children, Kirby and Will Bumpus. This year's festivities will also include a very special guest: Luca Miller, Kirby and husband Virgil Miller's newborn son.
After months of anticipation—including Gayle contemplating her grandma name, a nursery shopping trip with Katy Perry, and a baby shower—Luca came into the world in September 2021. Upon meeting her first grandson, Gayle said on CBS This Morning, "I'm so nuts about him." Yesterday, Oprah's turn to meet baby Luca finally arrived.
And what a meeting it was! By the time Kirby and Virgil pulled into the driveway of Oprah's Montecito home, the applause had already begun. Then came the singing. As Kirby walked toward the staircase with the baby in a carriage, Oprah and her daughter-girls launched into a choreographed version of The Lion King song "The Circle of Life." Oprah danced in the middle as her daughter-girls sang and danced around her like the most joyful chorus.
Standing next to the 12-foot Christmas trees that flank her home's entrance, Oprah finally got to greet Luca. "That is a beautiful baby," she told her goddaughter, Kirby. Then, she had her first conversation with Luca, who remained serene throughout the encounter and made rapt eye contact with Oprah. "I know you've been waiting to see me. I've been waiting to see you," Oprah said.
While she was waiting, Oprah was also preparing for Luca's arrival. The columns of her house's front entrance were festooned with blue, white, teal, and gold balloons, complementing the gold ornaments on the trees behind them. Above them, a multicolored banner read, "Welcome Baby Luca." All of these decorations made one thing clear: The family might be gathering for the holidays—but this is entirely Luca's day.
Though Oprah and Stedman stopped exchanging gifts 35 years ago, Gayle and her family still put presents under the tree for one another. We can't predict what, exactly, Luca will receive for his first Christmas, but we're guessing he'll find at least a few new children’s books among the bounty—and certainly loads of love.

Trump's surgeon general suggests the former president only decided to publicly back vaccines because Biden praised him first
Trump endorsed coronavirus vaccines this week, saying it's protecting people and not killing anyone.
Jerome Adams, his surgeon general, suggested he waited to say this until Biden praised him.
"You can't deny that that is when he changed his tune and came out and supported vaccinations," he said.
Former President Donald Trump's surgeon general implied that Trump waited to express public support for coronavirus vaccines until President Joe Biden praised his involvement in them.
Jerome Adams, who served as US surgeon general under Trump, told CNN's "AC360" on Thursday that he was surprised Biden had not praised Trump over the vaccines earlier, and suggested Trump had been waiting to back the vaccines until he got the mention.
"We know the president's love language is words of affirmation. We know Joe Biden is known for his cooperation," Adams said.
"So, to me, what was most shocking, what was most telling, wasn't that Donald Trump came out and supported vaccines — it was that it took Joe Biden 11 months to finally do what he has been known to do for 79 years, and that's to reach out across the aisle.
Once he gave President Trump those words of affirmation, you heard President Trump come out and say: 'Thank you, I appreciate that.' And he applauded it. And I hope we see more of that."
The CNN host John Berman seemed surprised by Adams' comments on the Thursday show.
He said: "Come on, Dr. Adams. I mean — are you are telling me that Donald Trump didn't praise vaccines or boosters until Joe Biden decided to thank him for the vaccines? That's what he was waiting for?"
Adams responded by saying that he had studied psychiatry and psychology, and said: "People have different words of affirmation, different love languages. That's the truth.
"That is when you saw Donald Trump change his tune. I'm not saying it's right, I'm not saying it's wrong. I'm saying you can't deny that that is when he changed his tune and came out and supported vaccinations.
"And regardless, that's a good thing."
Biden had said on Tuesday: "Thanks to the prior administration and our scientific community, America was one of the first countries to get the vaccine."
Trump endorsed the vaccines to the conservative commentator Candace Owens in an interview published Wednesday.
"The vaccine worked. But some people aren't taking it. The ones that get very sick and go to the hospital are the ones that don't take the vaccine," he said.
"But its still their choice, and if you take the vaccine, you're protected. Look the results of the vaccine are very good, and if you do get it, it's a very minor form. People aren't dying when they take the vaccine."
Trump has sent mixed messages over his support for the coronavirus vaccine. He sought praise for the vaccines being developed while he was president, and got vaccinated himself.
But much of his base is against the vaccine, and he notably did not get vaccinated in public, despite many other politicians doing so.
He was booed by a crowd of his own supporters on Sunday when he announced that he supported vaccines and had received a booster shot.

US to lift travel ban on 8 southern African countries
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. will lift travel restrictions to eight southern African countries on New Year's Eve, the White House announced Friday.
The restrictions, imposed last month, were meant to blunt the spread of the COVID omicron variant.
The Nov. 29 ban barred nearly all non-U.S. citizens who had recently been in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi.
White House spokesman Kevin Munoz said on Twitter that the decision was recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Munoz said the temporary travel bans bought scientists necessary time to study the new virus variant and conclude that the current vaccinations are effective in blunting its impact.
Omicron is now spreading rapidly throughout the U.S., including among the vaccinated, but a huge majority of those being hospitalized are unvaccinated.
“The restrictions gave us time to understand Omicron and we know our existing vaccines work against Omicron, esp boosted,” Munoz wrote on Twitter.

Israel Found a Way to Make Soldiers Invisible
Picture this: A special operations team has set up an observation post on a rocky hillside in enemy territory. The team’s mission: provide surveillance of the terrorists planning an attack from their camp below, and then target the commander once preparations have reached their peak.
Down in the camp, the commander is confident the valley above is free of danger. There’s little cover, and he’s outfitted his sentries with night-vision goggles that would light up with the heat signature of any threats. The special ops troops have covered themselves with camouflage that not only blends in with the rock-strewn hillside, but hides their telltale heat. The team is difficult to see during the daytime, but impossible to spot at night.
Before the attack is set to commence, the commander calls his fighters before him. As he begins to speak, a pair of crosshairs a half-mile away drifts over his silhouette. The sniper exhales and gently squeezes the trigger.
This scenario could become possible thanks to a new camouflage material, Kit 300, developed by Israeli defense contractor Polaris Solutions. Kit 300 is a “thermal visual concealment”—essentially a sheet that uses advanced materials to block a soldier’s body heat. This renders them invisible to night-vision sensors, which in recent decades have become available to terrorist groups.
The first American night-vision device, the M3 Infrared, debuted in the final days of World War II. Early gadgets typically paired an infrared spotlight with an image amplifier. The infrared light was invisible to the naked eye, but would illuminate a target for the image amplifier. Later scopes did away with the infrared light source entirely, instead amplifying ambient light, particularly moonlight.
In the 1980s, thermal imagers heralded a revolution in night-fighting capability. By detecting small differences in heat in their field of view, thermal imagers show a person as defined by their radiated body heat, with the hands, face, and other exposed body parts shining brightly. A tank fighting at night would be seen via its engine panels.
Through the 1990s, thermal imagers used to confer a huge edge on the armies of the countries who had the technology. But as the tech advanced, it became easier to acquire. After the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel complained that night vision sold by Britain and Italy to Iran to stem the flow of drugs was discovered in the possession of the terrorist group. By 2017, Iran was reportedly manufacturing thermal imagers of its own.
In 2018, when the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Nicholson, accused Russia of giving aid to the Taliban, senior Afghan police officers and military figures said night- vision goggles were part of the gear that Russia supplied.
Kit 300 camouflage could give NATO and its allies their nighttime advantage back. Polaris is tight-lipped about exactly what goes into the Kit 300 sheet, stating only that it consists of “microfibres, metals, and polymers.” The foil-like material can be formed into rock-shaped structures for soldiers to hide behind. A large sheet of the material can hide vehicles as large as a Hummer.
Roughly the size of a twin bedsheet, a Kit 300 sheet weighs around one pound and compresses into a small roll. It’s also strong enough to be used as a litter to carry injured soldiers. Plus, the sheet is reportedly waterproof and has been tested in rain and high heat.
While armies with thermal-imaging devices once held a trump card over their enemies, they must continue to develop countermeasures of their own to survive. Devices like the Kit 300 will allow soldiers to once again disappear.

Then-President Donald Trump had to keep reshooting a video during the Capitol riot because he couldn't say the "right thing" to tell his supporters to go home, the chair of the January 6 committee said.
"It appears that he tried to do a taping several times, but he wouldn't say the right thing," committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson told The Washington Post, citing witness interviews and media reports.
Trump had stayed publicly silent for 187 minutes after his supporters breached the Capitol in January 6. The committee investigating the riot is trying to understand why the former president took so long to speak as it weighs recommending criminal charges against him.
Thompson's comments follow increasing speculation that Trump's behavior during the riot could mean he illegally obstructed Congress.
Rep. Liz Cheney, vice chair of the January 6 committee, previously suggested the committee could find Trump guilty of criminal obstruction.
In the video he eventually put out on January 6, Trump told his supporters at the Capitol to home, and called the mob "very special people."
Thompson told The Post that the fact Trump had to keep retaking the video was of interest to the committee because it could help explain why he took so long to speak.
The reasons for Trump's delayed response are significant because it could help the committee decide whether to make a criminal referral against Trump, Thompson said.
In that case, Congress would inform the Justice Department that it believed a crime was committed, and federal prosecutors would decide whether to bring charges against Trump.
"One of those concerns is that whether or not it was intentional, and whether or not that lack of attention for that longer period of time, would warrant a referral," he said.
Representatives for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Warming relations between Russia and China pose challenge for Biden
Last week Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly demanded that the U.S. and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization bar Ukraine from its military alliance, move troops, weapons and installations from its eastern flank and issue “security guarantees” about the future of the region.
“The ball is in their court,” Putin said at a news conference last week. “They need to respond to us with something.”
While Western officials responded with indignation, saying Putin would not tell NATO what to do, Chinese President Xi Jinping applauded Putin’s brinkmanship. At a video summit last week with Putin, Xi denounced the U.S. and NATO for “interfering in the internal affairs of China and Russia,” according to China’s state-run news agency Xinhua.
The increasingly warm relations between China and Russia are raising eyebrows, as well as the potential stakes, across the Western world, but the tensions with Washington have been building for months.
When the U.S. became the first nation earlier this month to announce that its government officials would boycott February’s Olympic Games in Beijing in response to China’s treatment of Uyghur Muslims and its steamrolling of Hong Kong’s democracy movement, Putin rose to Xi’s defense, calling the diplomatic protest “pointless” and saying he planned to attend.
In October, in between Chinese sorties in violation of Taiwan’s airspace, China played war games in the waters off the contested island and was joined in its impressive naval and aeronautical display of force by the Russian military.
“Whether one calls it a marriage of convenience, a bromance or a strategic cooperation, the relationship between Putin and Xi is definitely intensifying,” Roland Freudenstein, vice president and head of Globsec Brussels, a nonpartisan think tank, told Yahoo News. If Russia instigates a military invasion of Ukraine, he added, “the temptation for the Chinese to do something about Taiwan increases exponentially — and vice versa.”

Having moved to the U.S. for a research project involving Russia, China and the U.S., Ziener sees growing concern about the Russia-China relationship ramp-up in recent weeks. Putin has amassed some 100,000 troops and military equipment near Ukraine's border, while China keeps sending warplanes into Taiwanese airspace and loudly objecting to Taiwan’s moves to be recognized as independent, including having its own seat at the United Nations.
