From the Melbourne abstract:

Whereas current technology can allow paralyzed patients to control robotic limbs using thoughts alone, implantation of the necessary electrodes requires highly risky brain surgeries with potentially fatal outcomes, thus hampering clinical translation. Our solution is to place recording electrodes within a cerebral vein adjacent to the motor cortex using a stent, which obviates the need for invasive brain surgery. In proof-of-concept studies, we have demonstrated that our technology can record movement-related neural information in animals for longer than 6 months. We now seek the opportunity to conduct preclinical safety studies and enable translation of our research into clinical application.

Objective: Our objective is that, following manufacture of our technology and conduction of preclinical safety and efficacy studies, the Royal Melbourne Hospital Human Research and Ethics Committee will approve our novel neural interface for implantation in a first-in-human trial. The success of our proof-of-concept studies, which were published in Nature Biotechnology, supports the feasibility of this objective.
