Democratic-led House passes China competition bill with funding for chipmakers

GOP leaders argue the measure comes too late to slow inflation, for which they say Democrat President Biden is responsible

The House passed a China competition bill on Friday intended to improve the country's ability to produce semiconductors and make the nation less reliant on China.

The measure aims, more specifically, to shore up strained supply chains and bolster international alliances.

The bill comes amid a global shortage of computer chips that has resulted in skyrocketing prices for automobiles, electronics and other goods that use them.

However, Republicans have said the measure is "toothless" and fails to hold the country, run by the Chinese Communist Party, accountable for economic and human rights violations, the Associated Press reports.

Republicans also argue the measure comes too late to slow record inflation under Democrat President Biden's term and does little to challenge China's economic position. GOP leaders have said the bill wastes taxpayer dollars on environmental initiatives and other unnecessary programs, such as $8 billion for a fund that helps developing countries adjust to climate change.

The nearly 3,000-page bill includes massive investments designed to boost semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S., including roughly $52 billion in grants and subsidies to help the semiconductor industry and $45 billion to strengthen supply chains for high-tech products, according to an official summary of the bill.

A budget watchdog group, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said the cost of the full bill is unknown.

The 50-50 Senate passed their own version of the bill over 7 months ago.

Long Funeral Homes, Short Life Insurers? Ex-Blackrock Fund Manager Discovers Disturbing Trends In Mortality

Four weeks ago, OneAmerica insurance company CEO Scott Davison revealed that they had witnessed 'the highest death rates in the history of this business - not just at OneAmerica' with a jump of '40% over what they were pre-pandemic.' Interestingly, Davison noted that the majority of deaths are not classified as due to Covid-19.

So the CEO in his own words. They are mandating vaccines in the workplace and raising premiums in lower vaccinated counties because they are mistakenly guessing here initially. The premiums will change to higher vaccinated areas as time moves on is my guess. He missed the plot. pic.twitter.com/avjFxkn7su

— Ed ☯️Free Thinker & Oracle (@DowdEdward) January 3, 2022

The implication to many was clear - that the Covid-19 vaccine is linked to the excess mortality, and months of vaccine injury reports were now spilling over to actuarial data - which is beginning to show, among other things, that younger, working-age people began dying in greater numbers as vaccine mandates hit - for a disease which primarily kills older, non-working age individuals. The counter argument, often presented without evidence, is that the increase is due to people who postponed elective surgeries and other medical treatments during the pandemic.

Ex-Blackrock fund manager Ed Dowd is in the former camp, and has spent the last month analyzing breadcrumbs associated with a rise in excess mortality vs. pre-pandemic levels. Given that we're now in the middle of earnings season, there are some pretty big crumbs rolling out of the insurance and funeral services industries which are beginning to paint a disturbing picture.

A few key observations:

Mortality worsened in 2021 vs. 2020 despite widespread vaccinations

A spike in Mortality among younger, working-age individuals coincided with vaccine mandates

The spike in younger deaths peaked in Q3 2021 when Covid deaths were extremely low (but rising into the end of September)

On Tuesday, financial insurance company Unum reported that their Life segment saw an increase of 9% in their ratio of payouts vs. premiums (Benefit ratio), a 17.4% increase in 2021 vs. 2020 despite widespread vaccinations, and a 13.3% increase over 2019.

In 2019 the unit had $266 million profit, last year a profit of $82 million & this year a loss of -$192 million. A swing of $458 million lower over 2 years. Important to remember these are employed working age folks. Other fun numbers:

Q4 vs 2020= +21%

Q4 vs 2019= +36%

— Ed ☯️Free Thinker & Oracle (@DowdEdward) February 2, 2022

On Wednesday, Dowd noted that funeral home company Carriage Services saw a 28% increase in September 2021 vs. 2020, and a 13% increase in August vs. the same period. Funerals and cremations are up 12% and 13% respectively on the quarter.

In general, funeral homes saw an uptick in business in Q3, and Dowd will be closely monitoring Q4 reports which are expected around Feb. 15 - less than two weeks away.

Business has been quite good since the introduction of the vaccines & the stock was up 106% in 2021. Curious no?

Guys this is shocking as 89% of Funeral homes are private in US. We are seeing the tip of iceberg. The public companies report Q4 middle of February pic.twitter.com/M2rpNhIJzt

— Ed ☯️Free Thinker & Oracle (@DowdEdward) February 2, 2022

Dowd also noted on Wednesday that Lincoln National's death claims are up 13.7% y/y, and up 57% in Q4 vs. 2019. CFO Randy Frietag explained on Thursday that in 2021, the share of young people dying from Covid doubled in the second half of the year.

Tom Gallagher of Evercore asked the question of Covid mortality impact. That was the answer.

Boom 💥 folks it’s clear as day what changed in second half of 2021. Variants less virulent than original but we had mandates & boosters hitting. This is a total shit show to behold.

— Ed ☯️Free Thinker & Oracle (@DowdEdward) February 3, 2022

Meanwhile, Reinsurance Group of America noted in their Thursday earnings call that Q4 was impacted by a meaningful level of Covid-19 mortality claims despite the fact that the Covid-19 vaccines have been around for more than a year.

— Ed ☯️Free Thinker & Oracle (@DowdEdward) February 3, 2022

Also noting a spike in younger deaths which peaked in Q3 2022, is Hardford Insurance Group, which reported that mortality is up 32% from 2019 pre-covid levels, and 20% from 2020 pre-vaccine levels.

…because fewer older people dying, but younger people are dying more…🤔…very odd pic.twitter.com/CCfqXY3E3M

mRNA inventor Dr. Robert Malone noted the troubling data in a recent appearance on Steve Bannon's "War Room":

Is there a fancy Latin name for the fallacy where someone points out that a useless harmful covid mitigation measure is useless and harmful, and lockdowners respond with a link to a chart that shows covid kills people?

— Jay Bhattacharya (@DrJBhattacharya) February 4, 2022

Some key questions for the insurance companies:

What are the leading causes of death for 2020 and 2021?

How many of those who died were vaccinated vs. unvaccinated?

Reinsurance Group of America, for example, reported a profit in Q4 2020 when the most of the population was unvaccinated and amid a deadlier strain of Covid-19, yet they registered a loss in Q4 2021 with more than 60% of the country fully vaccinated (and around 75% who have received at least one dose).

Perhaps this is why Pfizer is now actively fighting to suppress research data submitted to the FDA for approval - while the pharmaceutical giant and its peers continue to enjoy legal immunity from vaccine injuries.

In closing, some tongue-in-cheek non investment advice from Dowd:

Long funeral homes short life insurance. Not investment advice but illustrates my point. One industry is growing the other is not. $SCI $CSV pic.twitter.com/OIvUCQGdNX

Lawsuit Claims Foreign Powers Sought To Interfere In 2016 Election To Help Hillary Clinton

https://thefederalist.com/2022/02/04/lawsuit-claims-foreign-powers-sought-to-interfere-in-2016-election-to-help-hillary-clinton/

Felix Sater claims the Kazakhstan players were seeking to interfere in the 2016 election to benefit Hillary Clinton.

On Feb. 3, long-time Trump associate Felix Sater filed a cross-complaint in a New York federal court. The complaint alleges that Russian and Kazakhstan-connected individuals and entities conducted “a shadow intelligence operation of Sater and Trump for the purpose of manufacturing information to harm Donald Trump politically,” including by providing Christopher Steele a PowerPoint presentation riddled with lies Steele later fed to the FBI.

Sater’s cross suit comes nearly three years after the City of Almaty, Kazakhstan, and BTA Bank filed suit against Sater, two of the companies he owned, a former business associate, and that associate’s LLCs, in City of Almaty, Kazakhstan v. Sater.

In that lawsuit, filed in May 2019, Almaty and BTA Bank alleged that Sater and the other defendants helped Mukhtar Ablyazov, the former chairman of the BTA Bank, and Viktor Khrapunov, the former mayor of the City of Almaty, launder money the duo had stolen from the plaintiffs. In the case, the plaintiffs sought recovery of millions of dollars in stolen funds, based on claims of fraud, conspiracy, unjust enrichment, and conversion.

While that case has been pending in a federal district court in New York since spring 2019, on Thursday Sater filed for the first time counterclaims against Almaty and BTA Bank. In yesterday’s filing, Sater also added the Republic of Kazakhstan and Arcanum (Asia) Ltd. as parties.

In his lawsuit, Sater claimed that in June 2015, BTA Bank, Almaty, and Kazakhstan, referred to as the Kazakh Parties throughout the court filing, entered a “confidential assistance agreement” or “CAA,” in which they agreed to pay Sater (through his company, Litco) $100,000 per month, plus a percentage of the funds recovered, for Sater’s help in recovering assets stolen by Ablyazov.

The CAA, however, was merely a “guise,” Sater alleged, with Arcanum and the Kazakh Parties instead conspiring “to leak false and defamatory information about Sater to media outlets including ABC News.” “This was part of a concerted effort to falsely (and absurdly) portray Sater, a longtime business partner of Donald Trump, as a Russian agent and Kremlin stooge,” the lawsuit alleged….moar

ICYMI: "Newsmax's Trump Ratings at Parity With Fox News"

Newsmax's Trump Ratings at Parity With Fox News

NM was the big ratings-winner with its exclusive cable coverage of former President Donald Trump's rally in Texas last weekend.

Some 2.9 million cable viewers tuned in to watch the event live from Conroe — and 1.1 million of them were adults ages 35-64, the demographic craved by advertisers.

Though Newsmax is carried in 20 million fewer homes than Fox, total audience impressions for both networks during Trump's speech was almost at parity, both drawing around 1.4 million viewers per minute, according to Nielsen.

Newsmax's huge streaming audience also accessed live rally coverage, adding more than 2.5 million total viewers, giving the network a reach of over 5.4 million, according to network data.

"Everything is bigger in Texas — including Newsmax Trump events,'' said Jason Villar, Newsmax vice president of media/market research and insights.

Business Insider trumpeted Newsmax's over-the-weekend ratings success with the headline: "Newsmax's audience skyrockets during Trump rallies that other networks, including Fox News, ignore.''

"We can't speak to Fox News' decisions, but we believe this rally was a significant news event that was worthy of coverage," Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy told The Washington Post, which also reported on Newsmax's coverage.

"Newsmax treated the Texas rally like a Super Bowl, with pre-game coverage and postgame analysis from Bill O'Reilly and Ben Carson — both former Fox News personalities — as well as an on-screen poll asking viewers whether they want Trump to run again,"

Trump: …Far left lunatic Justin Trudeau who has destroyed Canada with insane Covid mandates

2/4/2022 12:22:00 PM - A statement from President Trump, Chairman of TMTG:

Facebook and Big Tech are seeking to destroy the Freedom Convoy of Truckers. The Freedom Convoy is peacefully protesting the harsh policies of far left lunatic Justin Trudeau who has destroyed Canada with insane Covid mandates. Now, thankfully, the Freedom Convoy could be coming to DC with American Truckers who want to protest Biden’s ridiculous Covid policies.

Facebook is canceling the accounts of Freedom Convoy USA, and GoFundMe is denying access to funds that belong to the Freedom Convoy. This is unacceptable and extremely dangerous in any country that values free expression.

TruthSocial is announcing today that we are welcoming the Freedom Convoy with open arms to communicate freely on TruthSocial when we launch – coming very soon!

TruthSocial will fight back against Big Tech so we can protect our rights to free expression. Also, on top of everything, it is big news that Facebook daily users went down for the first time ever, people are tired of biased social media like Twitter and Facebook, and it’s showing in their numbers!

South Dakota Republicans kill fetal heartbeat bill without debate

Republican lawmakers in South Dakota have killed a pro-life heartbeat bill supported by Gov. Kristi Noem (R), claiming that the bill could interfere with a separate ongoing lawsuit against Planned Parenthood.

During the governor's state of the state address in January, Noem proposed a fetal heartbeat bill modeled after Texas' Heartbeat Act, which prevents a woman from seeking an abortion after her unborn baby develops a heartbeat, usually sometime around six weeks. Her proposal was received with a standing ovation from the legislature, including every member of the House State Affairs Committee, which oversees "policy decisions of overriding state concern."

Abortions have dropped by 80% in South Dakota over the last decade, but there is more that we can do to protect unborn lives.\n\nWe must end abortions once a heartbeat can be detected. Any abortion after that point stops that child's heartbeat – stops that gift from God.pic.twitter.com/EUbHMTGsRA

— Governor Kristi Noem (@Governor Kristi Noem) 1642086505

However, on Wednesday the Republican-controlled House State Affairs committee refused to give the heartbeat bill a hearing, preventing it from being considered at all for the rest of the year.

The committee members, who say they are pro-life conservatives, told the Argus Leader that Noem's heartbeat bill would potentially jeopardize a pending lawsuit against Planned Parenthood in the U.S. Eighth Circuit Court. They claimed that this lawsuit has a chance to challenge the Supreme Court precedent in Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortions in 1973.

"I am as pro-life as can be, and because of that, I do not want to do something that will jeopardize our involvement in a court case that could abolish abortion in this country," said Republican House Speaker Spencer Gosch.

“It’s the Legislature’s job to legislate, not the governor’s,” he added. “What she had wasn’t a bill. It was language, and we said that it’s not going to be a bill, and therefore, it’s not going to be heard. End of discussion.”

Noem vehemently disagrees with the Republican leader's argument and has blasted the committee's decision to refuse to even give her heartbeat proposal a hearing.

“Every single life is precious and deserving of our protection — but apparently South Dakota legislators think otherwise,” the governor said. "It grieves me that they would take this unprecedented action at this time based on the advice of one out-of-state lawyer. National pro-life leaders believe that now is the time to have this sort of protection in law to save lives."

According to Noem's office, the governor was referring to Harold Cassidy, a New Jersey-based lawyer who previously defended South Dakota's 2005 Informed Consent Abortion Statute, a law that requires abortionists to inform women that an abortion takes the life of a "whole, separate, unique, living human being."

Cassidy's website describes him as "widely recognized as the leading attorney in the nation in protecting pregnant mothers against the excesses and abuses of an abortion industry.” It also states that he works as a consultant for pro-life legislators in various states, and Noem spokesman Ian Fury said he is advising Republican legislators.
