Russian forces at 70% of level needed for full Ukraine invasion - U.S. officials

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Russia has in place about 70% of the combat power it believes it would need for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine and is sending more battalion tactical groups to the border with its neighbor, two U.S. officials said on Saturday.

In the last two weeks, the number of battalion tactical groups (BTG) in the border region has risen to 83 from 60 as of Friday and 14 more are in transit, the officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the information.

As to the timing of an invasion, the ground is expected to reach peak freeze around Feb. 15, the officials said, allowing for off-road mechanized transit by Russian military units. Such conditions would continue until the end of March.

That timeline and the growing number and capability of Russian forces close to Ukraine could suggest the window for diplomacy is shutting.

The U.S. officials did not provide evidence to back up their estimates of Russia's forces.

As Russia masses more than 100,000 troops near the border, it has said it is not planning an invasion but could take unspecified military action if its security demands are not met. Those include a promise that NATO will never admit Ukraine, a demand Washington and NATO have said is unacceptable.

Washington believes Russia may choose other options than a full-scale invasion, including a limited incursion, and does not believe President Vladimir Putin had made a final decision, the officials said.

But they said Putin is putting in place a force that can execute all scenarios.

If Russia were to invade the capital of Kyiv, it could fall within a couple of days, the U.S. officials said.

A full-scale invasion would cause major casualties, one of the officials said.

Ukraine could suffer 5,000 to 25,000 troop casualties, while Russia's troop casualties could be between 3,000 and 10,000, and civilian casualties could range from 25,000 to 50,000, according to U.S. estimates, the official said.

A full invasion would also prompt the flight of millions of refugees and internally displaced persons in Europe, Washington believes.

Top Biden aide says Ukraine invasion could come 'any day'

1/“It could happen as soon as tomorrow or it could take some weeks yet,” Sullivan said. He added that Putin “has put himself in a position with military deployments to be able to act aggressively against Ukraine at any time now."

Still, Sullivan said that the administration held on to hope that the Russians would move to de-escalate the situation through diplomacy.

"The key thing is that the United States needs to be and is prepared for any of those contingencies and in lockstep with our allies and partners," Sullivan said. “We have reinforced and reassured our allies on the eastern flank."

Texas Rep. Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, attended a classified briefing last week that administration officials gave to members of Congress. He was asked on ABC whether he came away from the briefing thinking it was certain that Russia would move on Ukraine.

/2Meanwhile, elite U.S troops and equipment landed Sunday in southeastern Poland near the border with Ukraine following Biden’s orders to deploy 1,700 soldiers there amid fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Hundreds more infantry troops of the 82nd Airborne Division are still expected to arrive at the Rzeszow-Jasionka airport. A U.S. Army Boeing C-17 Globemaster plane brought a few dozen troops and vehicles.

Their commander is Maj. Gen. Christopher Donahue, who on Aug. 30 was the last American soldier to leave Afghanistan.

“Our national contribution here in Poland shows our solidarity with all of our allies here in Europe and, obviously, during this period of uncertainty we know that we are stronger together,” Donahue said at the airport.

Biden ordered additional U.S. troops deployed to Poland, Romania and Germany to demonstrate America’s commitment to NATO’s eastern flank amid the tensions between Russia and Ukraine. NATO’s eastern member Poland borders both Russia and Ukraine. Romania borders Ukraine.

The division can rapidly deploy within 18 hours and conduct parachute assaults to secure key objectives. Based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the division’s history goes back to 1917.

Biden is set to meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday at the White House. Scholz has said that Moscow would pay a “high price” in the event of an attack, but his government’s refusal to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine, bolster its troop presence in eastern Europe or spell out which sanctions it would support against Russia has drawn criticism abroad and at home.

French President Emmanuel Macron was to arrive Monday in Moscow for talks with Putin, and in the days to come, Scholz will be there, too.

Sullivan expressed certainty that operation of the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline “will not move forward" if Russia further invades Ukraine. Construction of the pipeline is complete, but gas is not yet flowing.

“While it’s true that Germany has not sent arms to Ukraine, after the United States, they are the second largest donor to Ukraine in Europe," Sullivan said. "The great thing … about having the kind of alliances we have with 30 NATO allies is that different allies are going to take different pieces of this.”

Sullivan appeared on “Fox News Sunday,” NBC's "Meet the Press" and ABC's “This Week.”

Turkey is ready to cooperate with Azerbaijan to enable maximum benefit from TANAP - minister

(MENAFN- Trend News Agency)

Turkey is ready to deepen cooperation with Azerbaijan and other countries in the region to enable the maximum benefit from the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), Energy and Natural Resources Minister said Friday, as the country is vital for Europe's energy supply security, Trend reports citing Daily Sabah .

Fatih Donmez spoke during the eighth Advisory Board Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor (SCG), a route that brings supplies from the Caspian Sea to Europe and has been operational since 2020, held in Baku and chaired by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Dönmez said that the high-level participation in the event showed the determination of the countries in the region to cooperate more. European Union's energy commissioner was also in Baku for the event. Officials from other European countries as well as the United Kingdom and the United States were also part of the delegation.

Pointing out that the cooperation between countries is developing more and more each year, taking into account the concerns of energy security and climate change, Donmez said:“Energy transformation, which is a global phenomenon within the scope of collective efforts to combat climate change, is a necessity and all countries are facing the transformation process.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an economic recession and the energy sector was also affected significantly, Donmez said, noting that a rapid recovery process started after the 4% decrease in global energy demand in 2020.

'This economic recovery puts serious pressures on some parts of today's energy system and causes sharp price increases in natural gas, coal and electricity markets,' he said and that“these developments have proven the importance of regional cooperation for energy security.'

He reiterated that the SGC would not have been possible without support from Turkey and Azerbaijan.

He stressed that Turkey“is the most reliable port for increasing the supply security of the EU.”

“Turkey has proven its reliability with its infrastructure investments and its success in international projects,” the minister added.

Donmez said that additional reserves and additional source countries will be needed to increase the volume of gas transported through the pipelines connected to the SGC, emphasizing that Turkey“is ready to develop cooperation with Azerbaijan and other countries in the region.”

“TANAP has a maximum capacity of 31 billion cubic meters (bcm). We support initiatives to invest to use this who capacity,” he said.

West keeps on speaking about Russian threat to pull troops to Ukraine - Russian MP

MOSCOW, February 6. /TASS/. The United States continues to speak about the alleged Russian threat to Ukraine, using such allegations as a pretext to pull troops and arsenals to that country, which destabilizes the situation, Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the international committee of the Russian State Duma (lower parliament house) said on Sunday, commenting on US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s statements.

Earlier, Sullivan said that Russia could annex Crimea. He did not rule out some Hybrid actions from Russia, including cyberattacks and political destabilization.

"Political destabilization happened in Ukraine back in 2014 thanks to the US ‘cookies’ in the maidan. The conflict in Donbass is the consequence of the policy of external governance, which has turned Ukraine into a bargaining chip. People refused to tolerate the dictation of the West-backed nationalists, they did not want to refuse from the use of their native Russian language, they refused to live by others’ rules," he wrote on his Telegram channel.

"The United States and its closest allies, including the countries that have recently joined the EU, continue to pump Ukraine with weapons, which will be used against civilians in the LPR and DPR (self-proclaimed Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics - TASS)," he noted. "The collective West is using the ‘Russian threat’ as a pretext to pull NATO contingents and arsenals closer to the border of our country."

He drew attention to Czech President Milos Zeman’s words, who spoke out against sending NATO soldiers to Ukraine as that country is not a member of the alliance. He said that the conflict in Donbass is a civil war. "These words, like any other adequate assessments of the situation, stirred outrage in Kiev. Foreign Minister [Dmitry] Kuleba said that Zeman’s words are an attempt to do harm to the Ukrainian-Czech relations. As a matter of fact, it is the Ukrainian authorities and their American string-pullers who are really doing harm to peaceful settlement in Donbass," Slutsky emphasized.

Recently, Western and Ukrainian media outlets have been echoing claims about a possible Russian aggression against Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier slammed such statements as "empty and groundless" and their goal is to whip up tensions. He stressed that Russia doesn’t pose any threat to anyone, but did not rule out possible provocations to justify the remarks in question and warned that attempts at using force to settle the crisis in southeastern Ukraine would have the most severe consequences.

Truck Traffic Across Michigan Affected By Canada Bridge Protest

A protest in Canada over vaccine mandates is causing major problems for truckers and other drivers at the Ambassador Bridge that connects Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. The bridge was closed Tuesday morning for drivers going from Detroit to Windsor. It was shut down for more than 12 hours and some truckers had to wait that whole time. Clay Barch, a truck driver making his way in to Detroit from Illinois, told Michigan News Network the bridge closure is being felt across the state.

“All the truck stops at Benton Harbor, Berrien Springs, Chicago, Firekeeper’s Casino. There’s a whole bunch of trucks sitting out there because there’s no place for them to go when they get to Detroit.”

Traffic from Canada to Detroit started moving eventually moving. So did traffic from Detroit to Canada. Supporters of the Freedom Convoy in Canada have been blocking traffic at border crossings across the country as they protest the government’s vaccination mandate.
