Taiwan has to find new ways to counter China's most powerful anti-ship cruise missile, Taiwanese navy officers say
South China Morning Post
7-9 minutes
The YJ-12 is considered to be mainland China's most dangerous anti-ship missile.
It is a threat to Taiwan and has advantages over US ships' air-defence systems, according to Taiwanese navy officers.
With its warships unable to repel the missile, Taiwan must find "innovative and asymmetric strategies," the officers say.
Taiwan needs an innovative strategy to counter the YJ-12, mainland China's most powerful supersonic cruise missile, a Taiwanese navy magazine has said.
The missile had been deployed to the coast of mainland China and to artificial islands in the South China Sea and posed a direct threat to Taiwan and to American aircraft carrier strike groups, it said.
Claimed to be Beijing's most dangerous anti-ship missile because of its range and speed, the YJ-12 can be launched from land, air and sea, and has advantages over the ship-borne air-defence systems on American aircraft carriers, according to an article in December's edition of the Taiwanese military's bimonthly Navy Professional journal.
"The Taiwan Strait is no longer a natural barrier to deter a growing and powerful PLA from across the waterway, and none of the Taiwan warships is able to deal with the powerful YJ-12," the article said.
"In such a military disparity, the Taiwanese military has to carefully assess its position and try to come up with innovative and asymmetric strategies to hit the enemy's weakness."

The article, written by active naval commanders Chen Yi-cheng and Luo Zhen-yu, said the People's Liberation Army's (PLA's) missile development had been inspired by the former Soviet Union's asymmetric doctrine â focused on its original advantages and specialities â as a means of countering the US's aircraft carrier strategy.
"The YJ-12 is a mixture of Russian and Chinese supersonic missile technologies," it said, explaining that it was based on the Soviet P-270 Moskit supersonic anti-ship cruise missile, supported by the PLA's advanced guiding radars and home-built BeiDou global navigation system to boost its precision strike capability.
It said the detection range of the antenna array on the American navy's early-warning aircraft was about 320 km (200 miles), but the YJ-12 missile had an operation range of over 400 km.
It also said that it was almost impossible to intercept a YJ-12 warhead, which has a speed of Mach 4 and can reach a target within 30 seconds once fired.
Satellite images have shown that the YJ-12 has been deployed to Fiery Cross, Mischief and Subi reefs â three artificial islands built by the PLA in the South China Sea â to deter US and Japanese vessels from coming to Taiwan's aid if it were attacked by the PLA, the article said.

Beijing regards self-ruled Taiwan as a renegade province to be returned to the mainland, by force if necessary.
The PLA expects the US and Japan to become involved in air and at sea in the event of a Taiwan contingency, and the YJ-12 â designed to target large and medium-sized vessels â could be used mainly against them, according to former PLA missile force instructor Song Zhongping.
"The deployment of YJ-12 missiles is aimed at warning the US and Japanese militaries that they could pay a huge price if they decided to intervene in the Taiwan issue," Song said.
The mainland military has 2 million troops equipped with two aircraft carrier platforms, about 780 warships and more than 3,000 military aircraft, compared with Taiwan's 183,000 military personnel, about 120 naval ships and more than 700 fighter jets.

Taiwan has developed its own coastal defence hypersonic cruise missile, the Hsiung Feng III, and the authors suggested deploying it on the front line along with the more powerful American Harpoon missile that Washington has agreed to sell to the island.
The Taiwanese government said in 2020 that the Harpoon missile would have a range of 125 km and would be an asymmetric weapon capable of repelling many of the PLA's warships in the event of an invasion.
Another article, by Peng Chih-ling, an active ground force lieutenant colonel, detailed some counter-strategies that Taiwan could develop.
These included reinforcing defences along shores targeted by the PLA as landing sites, stepping up the island's submarine development, deploying a grid of missiles and drones with precision strike capability to target warships, and further improving ties with Japan and other regional countries as well as the US.

A quote from President Joe Biden exclaiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin âdoesnât wantâ him to beat Donald Trump in the 2020 election has come back to haunt him as the fate of Ukraine hangs in the balance.
âVladimir Putin doesnât want me to be President,â he tweeted in February of 2020. âHe doesnât want me to be our nominee. If youâre wondering why â itâs because Iâm the only person in this field whoâs ever gone toe-to-toe with him.â
Biden made this pronouncement even after former President Trump attempted to block the Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a policy position that Biden reversed within one year of his presidency when he scrapped sanctions on the company responsible for the pipeline.
âTo go ahead and impose sanctions now would, I think, be counterproductive in terms of our European relations,â Biden said in May of last year. âThey know how strongly I feel.â
Contrast Bidenâs statement with Trumpâs in 2018 when he said, âWeâre protecting Germany, weâre protecting France, weâre protecting all of these countries and then numerous of the countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russia where theyâre paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russia.â
Biden declared that Putin was rooting against him after Trump strengthened NATO and approved the sale of heavy arms to Ukraine.
âThe Trump administration has approved the $39 million sale of defensive lethal weapons to Ukraine,â ABC News reported at the time. âThe new package will include Javelin anti-tank weapons, with one U.S. official saying it includes 150 missiles and two launchers.â
During a press conference last week, nearly two years after his proclamation, President Biden baffled foreign policy experts when he said that a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine would be merely a âminor incursionâ:
I think what youâre going to see is that Russia will be held accountable if it invades and it depends on what it does. Itâs one thing if itâs a minor incursion and then we end up having to fight about what to do and not do, etc., but if they actually do what theyâre capable of doing with the forces theyâve amassed on the border it is going to be a disaster for Russia if they further invade Ukraine and our allies and partners are ready to impose severe cost and significant harm on Russia and the Russian economy.
Speaking to reporters in a phone call on Sunday night, a state department official announced that the Ukraine travel advisory currently stands at Level 4 â Do Not Travel â and that U.S. citizens within the country have been advised to seek a commercial flight home. In the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Biden administration said it will not be able to safely evacuate U.S. citizens.
âAs President Biden has said, military action by Russia could come at any time,â the official noted. âThe United States Government will not be in a position to evacuate U.S. citizens in such a contingency, so U.S. citizens currently present in Ukraine should plan accordingly, including by availing themselves of commercial options should they choose to leave the country.â

The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine on Monday dismissed the U.S. State Departmentâs withdrawal of the families of U.S. embassy staff in Kyiv as âprematureâ given the lack of âdrastic changeâ in tensions between the country and Russia.
The State Department announced it would withdraw the families of staffers and encourage private American citizens in Ukraine to leave because of an alleged imminent threat of invasion of the country by Russia. Russia invaded Ukraine nearly a decade ago, in 2014, and continues to colonize Ukraineâs Crimean peninsula to this day. The Ukrainian government also accuses Moscow of being heavily involved in the ongoing war in Donbas, eastern Ukraine, which the Kremlin insists is a civil war that has nothing to do with it.
Concern for Ukraine escalated last week after President Joe Biden announced that his administration would not intervene in the event of Russia committing a âminor incursionâ into Ukraine and appearing resigned to Russian leader Vladimir Putin inevitably seizing the country. The Ukrainian government refuted Bidenâs bizarre comments. In a speech last week, President Volodymyr Zelensky assured his people that the risks of Russian invasion âhave existed for more than a year, and they havenât increasedâ recently, contrary to Bidenâs comments.
The risk of a full Russian invasion of Ukraine increased last year when Biden chose to lift sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, which will connect Russia to Germany and grant the Putin regime unfettered access to the Western European natural gas market. While much of Washington, DC, debates the hypothetical of American military action in Ukraine, Zelensky has spent much of the past year encouraging Washington to simply restore the Trump-era sanctions on the pipeline before it produces windfall profits that could fund an invasion.
âThe Foreign Ministry has taken into account the U.S. Department of Stateâs departure decision for families of the employees of the U.S. embassy in Kyiv and the authorized voluntary departure of certain employees,â Oleh Nikolenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, told the news agency Interfax on Monday. âAs we respect the right of foreign states to ensure the security of their diplomatic staff, we believe that the move of the U.S. side is premature and displays excessive caution.â
âThere has been no drastic change in the security levels lately, considering that the Russian threat has been persisting since 2014, and the Russian military buildup near the border began back in April 2021, he said,â according to Interfax, repeating Zelenskyâs stance.
Nikolenko also noted that, as far as his government is aware, the American embassy in Kyiv âwill continue its full-fledged operation.â
During a special briefing on Sunday, two senior State Department spokespersons announced the new measure, which requires the family of embassy staff to leave Kyiv and âelevatesâ the agencyâs travel advisory on Ukraine from âLevel Four â Do Not Travelâ to âLevel Four â Do Not Travel.â
âFirst, as you know, weâve authorized the departure of some U.S. Government employees, while we have ordered the departure of all family members of U.S. Government employees at our embassy in Kyiv,â one of the senior officials said. âThe State Department has also elevated our Travel Advisory for Ukraine to Level Four â Do Not Travel due to the increased threat of Russian military action. I would note that the Travel Advisory was already at Level Four â Do Not Travel due to [Chinese coronavirus].â
âThese decisions were made out of an abundance of caution due to continued Russian efforts to destabilize the country and undermine the security of Ukrainian citizens and others visiting or residing in Ukraine,â the official stated, appearing to agree with the Ukrainian governmentâs assessment.
The announcement appeared to confuse and irritate journalists at the briefing.
âGuys, can you just please clarify, like, exactly what this order is?â asked Politico senior foreign affairs correspondent Nahal Toosi. âLike, youâre ordering the relatives of all of the diplomats to leave, but youâre giving, like, the option to some or all of the diplomats themselves to leave? Like, itâs written in this really confusing way, and Iâd be really grateful if you could clarify what it actually means.â
The senior State Department officials insisted that the measure was a response to a âholistic viewâ of the current situation on the Russo-Ukrainian border. That situation appeared to change significantly after Biden signaled during a press conference last week that there were conditions in which the United States would not help Ukraine should Russia invade.
âI think what youâre going to see is that Russia will be held accountable if it invades. And it depends on what it does,â Biden told reporters. âItâs one thing if itâs a minor incursion and then we end up having a fight about what to do and not do, et cetera.â
Biden also told reporters that he believed Putin would âmove inâ to Ukraine because âhe has to do something,â apparently justifying any further invasion of the country as inevitable.
âHeâs never seen sanctions like the ones I promised will be imposed if he moves, number one,â Biden asserted.
Zelensky has spent much of the past year questioning why those sanctions are not already in place, as they were under President Trump. In June, Zelensky told the Washington outlet Axios that Biden had sent âall the signalsâ that he would impose further sanctions on Nord Stream 2, but then abruptly lifted the sanctions already in place. Zelensky said he found out the sanctions had ended from media reports â no one from the White House bothered to inform him. The Ukrainian president repeatedly described himself and his administration as âunpleasantly surprised.â
âI understand that the relationship between the United States and Germany is very important,â he emphasized. âI wouldnât want to intervene between these two esteemed countries. However, how many Ukrainian lives does the relationship between the United States and Germany cost?â
Zelenskyâs initial response to Bidenâs âminor incursionâ remark was to deliver a nationally televised speech urging Ukrainians to ignore the White Houseâs alarmism on Russian invasions, asserting that Russia has been invading Ukraine for almost a decade.
âDidnât the invasion start in 2014? Has the threat of war emerged just now? These risks have existed for more than a year, and they havenât increased,â Zelensky said. âWhat has increased is the hype around them.â
âTake a deep breath. Calm down,â Zelensky implored Ukrainians.
To Biden, Zelensky issued a simpler message: âthere are no minor incursions.â

Supreme Court Declines GOP Leader McCarthyâs Challenge to Pelosiâs Unconstitutional Proxy Voting Scheme
The US Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear GOP Minority Leader Kevin McCarthyâs challenge to Speaker Pelosiâs unconstitutional proxy voting scheme.
The Supreme Court did not provide a reason for rejecting McCarthyâs appeal.
In September, McCarthy asked the US Supreme Court to overturn Speaker Pelosiâs House proxy voting scheme.
Pelosi unilaterally extended her proxy voting scheme several times last year.
This is pure lawlessness and unprecedented corruption.
Pelosi used Covid to shred the Constitution.
A corrupt federal judge previously struck down McCarthyâs lawsuit so he took his complaint to the highest court of the land.
âAlthough the Constitution allows Congress to write its own rules, those rules cannot violate the Constitution itself, including the requirement to actually assemble in person. Since its adoption 14 months ago, proxy voting has shattered 231 years of legislative precedent and shielded the majority from substantive policy debates and questions, effectively silencing the voices of millions of Americans,â McCarthy wrote to the Supreme Court justices.
Recall, May 27, 2020 the House held its first âproxy voteâ since Congress first met in 1789 and GOP leader Kevin McCarthy sued to stop the constitutional abomination.
71 Democrats voted âby proxyâ in its first vote since adoption of its party-line rule.
In 2020, ONE Democrat in Maryland voted SEVEN TIMES on legislation in Congress in districts he didnât even represent.

Congressman Jim Jordan Blocks Stew Peters' Number, Backs Out Of Show Appearance
Republican Congressman Jim Jordan refuses to go on The Stew Peters Show, even going so far as to block the America First radio hosts phone number to avoid making an appearance.
National File has just learned that Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) refused to make an appearance on The Stew Peters Show and even blocked Petersâ phone number.
We asked Peters why the Congressman blocked him, and what the discussion would have been about, had Jordan not backed out of it.
Peters explained that he wanted to talk about the 2020 Presidential Election, which a significant number of Republicans believe was rife with corruption, voter fraud, and election discrepancies.
âThe election was stolen, not âquestionable.â There isnât âsuspected fraud,â itâs confirmed,â Peters exclusively told National File.
Peters wondered why politicians such as Congressman Jordan have refused to talk about the election, which he described as the real âinsurrection,â and instead talk about the events of January 6.
âWhy are we talking about January 6, not the REAL insurrection?â he said. âFeeding into the mainstream media and Democrat narrative, allowing both to distract from our completely hijacked political system.â
Peters told National File that he wanted to ask Jordan about the controversial COVID-19 vaccine injections, which do not prevent individuals from being infected with or spreading coronavirus and have been linked to adverse reactions.
âThe so-called âvaccinesâ have killed almost three times as many people as every other vaccine combined. Congress gave [vaccine manufacturers] blanket immunity, and unprecedented numbers of people are injured or dead,â Peters explained. âWhy hasnât Congress called for an IMMEDIATE FULL STOP to this injection?â
Peters than provided National File with a question for Jordan, since the Congressman refused to go on his show and blocked his number.
âAs a matter of fact, why havenât you felt it important to even so much as MENTION the poisonous injections?â Peters asked.

Clinton, Epstein, the Bidens, and more: Why are the press ignoring these stories?
Here is a well-researched article that the American media have essentially ignored.
According to the Daily Mail:
EXCLUSIVE: Revealed: The remarkable lengths taken to whitewash Bill Clinton's cosy links to pervert Jeffrey Epstein when Hillary ran for President
¡ Epstein's lawyer Darren Indyke tried to get workers to declare they had not seen former president Bill Clinton visiting the disgraced financier's 'Paedo Island'
¡ Miles and Cathy Alexander received the email during ill-fated Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential run which she lost to Donald Trump
The email came out of the blue one day in 2016. Almost a decade had passed since Miles and Cathy Alexander had left their jobs as residential managers of Little St James, Jeffrey Epstein's private island in the Caribbean.
Since then, Epstein had been jailed â briefly â for paedophile offences and the couple had retired to their native South Africa.
But now Darren Indyke, the disgraced tycoon's attorney, was back in touch. The lawyer wanted the Alexanders to do something that would be of particular benefit to Hillary Clinton and her campaign to become the first female President of the United States, later that year.
Epstein's lawyer Darren Indyke tried to scrub links between Bill Clinton and Epstein during Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign
It entailed them signing a sworn affidavit â which Indyke had already drafted for them â declaring they had never seen Senator Clinton's husband, President Bill Clinton, at their former home: 'Paedo Island', as it had come to be known. Whether or not the once-most powerful man in the world had set foot on a 78-acre speck in the U.S. Virgin Islands almost two decades ago says much about the toxicity of what is alleged to have happened there.
Both men deny Roberts's allegations. Clinton, whose presidency almost ended over his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, denies ever being on Little St James or having knowledge of Epstein's crimes. The president and the prince's baleful involvement with Epstein is down to one woman â Ghislaine Maxwell. The subsequent damage to their reputations largely rests on the word of another â Roberts. But what is undisputed is that both men criss-crossed the world on Epstein's jets, receiving hospitality from the financier's young female staff.

Taliban Terrorist Leaders Touch Down in Oslo to Woo Humanitarian Donors
Representatives of Afghanistanâs unelected Taliban government continued talks in Norway on Monday trying to build support for their rule while gaining access to billions in funds they say are needed to help ward off starvation.
The terrorist negotiators arrived by private jet from Kabul over the weekend ahead of the talks.
Since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in August 2021, the countryâs prosperity and quality of life has plummeted with the United Nations reporting some 23 million Afghans are facing hunger (55 percent of their population) and â10 million children across Afghanistan urgently need humanitarian assistance to surviveâ, France 24 reports.
Afghanistanâs humanitarian crisis has been caused by other nations withdrawing their international aid due to concerns it would finance the Talibanâs atrocities, rather than reach the people most in need.
This has been catastrophic for Afghanistan as â80 percentâ of their public spending budget â for services like schools or public hospitals â came from foreign aid. It has also been reported that government employees have not had their salaries paid, and the country is on the verge of collapse.
Talks began between the Taliban delegation and European nations on Sunday the 23rd of January and will continue for three days, and are being held at the Soria Moria Hotel, located just outside of Oslo.
The Taliban is expected to meet diplomats from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Norway, Italy and the European Union, and the talks will take place behind closed doors.
U.S. Special Representative Thomas West emphasised on social media how much he is looking forward to the exchange of ideas, saying: âAs we seek to address humanitarian crisis together with allies, partners, and relief orgs, we will continue clear-eyed diplomacy with the Taliban regarding our concerns and our abiding interest in a stable, rights-respecting and inclusive Afghanistan.â

FOIA Request Shows Only 17,371 Deaths In England & Wales Can Be Solely Attributed to COVID
The Facts:
A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request has revealed that 17,371 people in England and Wales died solely from COVID.
The data represents numbers recorded from the beginning of 2020 up until the end of September 2021.
These people had no other causes listed on their death certificates.
Reflect On:
Why are journalists not discussing what this could mean? The majority of people who have died with COVID have had multiple other causes listed on their death certificates. Why haven't we taken a more focused protection plan to protect the vulnerable?
A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request released at the end of 2021 reveals the total number of people who died of COVID without any pre-existing conditions in England and Wales. That number is 17,371 people from the beginning of 2020 up until the end of September 2021.
Breaking it down by each year, in 2020 there were 9,400 people that died of COVID who otherwise had no pre-existing conditions. In 2021 there were 7,971 people that died of COVID who otherwise had no pre-existing conditions. Itâs important to mention that these numbers do not include the remainder of the year from October to December of 2021.
Help Support Our FOI Efforts: We are holding the Canadian government accountable by submitting Freedom of Information requests demanding transparency on COVID policy decisions as we know science is not on the side of policy. Help us fund these efforts by donating today. Click here to Donate.
This means that in the last quarter of 2021, the amount of deaths that would need to take place to match 2020 would be around 1,429. Which is not far off from the 1,142 deaths that occurred from July to September in 2021 in the third quarter of the year.
The average age of those who died solely from COVID was 82.5 years of age, while the national average life expectancy is 79 years old for men, and 82.9 years of age for women. This means that life expectancy for men is actually lower than the average age of those who died from COVID without other underlying causes.
It is important to note that there was a drop in life expectancy for men of around 7 weeks throughout the pandemic. This being the first drop since the early 1980. Surprisingly, the life expectancy for women actually increased in the UK by half a week.
As a reference, during the Spanish flu the life expectancy dropped by around five years in the United Kingdom. With some reports out of the United States showing a drop in life expectancy up to 12 years for both men and women in 1918.
This information should not downplay the many deaths of those with pre-existing illnesses, disease and overall health problems that died with COVID. The elderly and vulnerable matter and protection should be focused on them as outlined in The Great Barrington Declaration.

Hugh Hefner's ex-girlfriend Sondra Theodore on being 'groomed' by Playboy founder: 'I saw the devil in him'
Hugh Hefnerâs magazine empire is being explored in docuseries titled 'Secrets of Playboy'
Hugh Hefnerâs ex-girlfriend Sondra Theodore is coming forward with shocking allegations about the Playboy founder.
The magazine empire is being explored in a 10-part A&E docuseries premiering on Monday titled "Secrets of Playboy." The special will feature new interviews with the former Playmate, along with numerous members of Hefnerâs staff and inner circle. Hefner died in 2017 at age 91.
In response to doc, a spokesperson for Playboy issued a statement to Fox News.
"Todayâs Playboy is not Hugh Hefnerâs Playboy," the statement began. "We trust and validate these women and their stories and we strongly support those individuals who have come forward to share their experiences. As a brand with sex positivity at its core, we believe safety, security, and accountability are paramount."
"The most important thing we can do right now is actively listen and learn from their experiences," it continued. "We will never be afraid to confront the parts of our legacy as a company that do not reflect our values today."
"As an organization with a more than 80% female workforce, we are committed to our ongoing evolution as a company and to driving positive change for our communities," the statement concluded.
Theodore talked to Fox News about why she's speaking out now, what it was like meeting Hefner at 19, as well as what compelled her to finally leave the Playboy Mansion.
Fox News: Why did you come forward with your story now?
Sondra Theodore: I had been trying to come forward with my story, along with [former Playmate] Miki Garcia, for the past 10 years. And we were blocked at every turn. We had people who were interested, and then all of a sudden they werenât interested. We were being shut down. We prayed for a woman like [filmmaker] Alex Dean to come along, a strong woman who was brave enough to take on Playboy and show us in the good light. We found that only a woman could really understand our stories.
