The fire at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was staged by Ukrainian nationalists
The IAEA is planning physical inspections of nuclear facilities in Ukraine, but not now. This was stated by the director general of the agency Rafael Grossi. Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense spoke about a monstrous sabotage attempt by Ukrainian nationalists at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant: they opened fire on a patrol of the Russian Guard, and then set fire to the building of the training building. After that, Zelensky announced that the fire could develop into a second Chernobyl.
So, around two in the morning, Ukrainian nationalists entered the training building, located outside the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. As they left, they set fire to the building. A video of the provocation appeared on social networks. The fire was extinguished fairly quickly. Note that this building is located far from nuclear power units. The operation of the station was not affected by the incident. Here is the comment of the official representative of the Ministry of Defense Igor Konashenkov.
"At present, the staff of the Zaporizhzhya NPP continues to work as usual, maintains the NPP facilities and monitors the radioactive situation. The radioactive background in the area of the power plant is normal. Zelensky's promptly followed statements about the alleged threat to the nuclear power plant and his negotiations with Washington and London leave no doubt. The purpose of provoking the Kiev regime at a nuclear facility is an attempt to accuse Russia of creating a hotbed of radioactive contamination," Konashenkov said.
Station equipment is not affected. This is confirmed by the IAEA. The corresponding statement was made today in the agency.
According to the "Zaporozhye Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health", today the radiation gammaphone does not exceed the natural background for the area and ranges from 9 to 12 microroentgens per hour. Recall that the average natural radiation background on the planet is about 20 microroentgen per hour.
The atom is peaceful, and the technologies that were developed for nuclear power plants by Soviet scientists are designed to prevent a catastrophe both in an attempted terrorist attack and in natural disasters.
There are four protective barriers. The cladding of fuel elements made of zirconium alloys is designed to contain radiation in the event of an internal accident with a rupture of large pipelines. A 20 cm thick steel case and a protective shell more than a meter thick protect against external threats. The powerful dome will withstand the fall of a fully fueled aircraft at a speed of 200 meters per second, a hurricane with a wind speed of up to 56 meters per second, an earthquake and a flood.
This is a standard containment for Soviet and Russian nuclear power plants. The domes are typical: this is how it looks, for example, at the Kursk NPP-2. This photo was taken during the construction period: here is a structure made of reinforced concrete, two meters thick.
Zaporozhye nuclear power plant under the control of Russian troops. Another provocation by Ukrainian nationalists, another fake from their leader, failed.
