At the beginning of my son William’s senior year of high school he was asked to list his identities of race, religion, sexual orientation, and disabilities. He was then asked to attach labels like oppressor and privileged to those identities. When he refused, his school threatened to fail him making him unable to graduate. We were devastated. We tried to opt out of the class but the school was unwavering in their position. He had to complete this class in order to graduate.
When I told William the schools decision he gave me the most defeated look and said, "That’s…unbelievable.” My heart dropped. I tried appealing to every person on the chain of command for any kind of relief that they could give us, to no avail. I couldn’t sleep that night. I had to make a decision. After speaking with my family, we decided to sue. Now my son William and I are in a landmark legal battle against indoctrination and discrimination.
