Special Counsel John Durham’s probe into the 2016 actions by the FBI and intelligence agencies to investigate former President Donald Trump's campaign have cost nearly $1.5 million so far, with only one relatively minor criminal case known to have been charged to date.
The Justice Department quietly posted the first public tally of costs incurred by Durham’s team along with those of other DOJ units supporting the probe on the Friday before the long Memorial Day weekend.
From the date of Durham's appointment by former Attorney General William Barr on Oct. 19, 2020, through March 31, the documents show Durham's office racked up $934,313 in costs while other DOJ components documented another $520,856 in expenditures.
Durham's probe began approximately 18 months before his appointment as a special counsel, so a full accounting of costs related to his efforts is not yet known. The Durham investigation has now lasted longer than the investigation conducted by former Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The document tallying the special counsel office's costs was first posted on the official Department of Justice website around mid-day Thursday but was then taken offline within minutes, according to documentation by a web tracking service reviewed by the Hearst Television National Investigative Unit. The accounting document was then reposted Friday morning.
