John Mark Karr was arrested in Thailand Wednesday. Authorities took him from the hotel where he had been living. He had just started a teaching job at the international school in Bangkok, the day before his arrest.
He admitted to police and reporters in a Thursday news conference: "I was with JonBenet when she died. I loved JonBenet. She died accidentally."
It's a stunning admission from the man, investigators say, murdered six-year-old JonBenet in 1996. But investigators insist, what happened in the basement of the Ramsey's Boulder, Colorado home, was no accident.
Ann Hurst of the US Department of Homeland Security says Karr is facing many charges, including, "First degree murder after deliberation, first degree murder, felony murder, first degree kidnapping, second degree kidnapping, sexual assault on a child."
Another shocking detail: Karr apparently sent several letters to JonBenet's mother Patsy. John Mark Karr: "I conveyed to her many things. Among them: I am so very sorry for what happened to JonBenet. It's very important for me, that everyone knows that I love her very much."
Ramsey family attorney, Lin Wood, acknowledges Karr's letters and says Mrs. Ramsey handed the information over to investigators.
Wood is also disputing news reports that say Karr spent a Christmas at the Ramsey home. He says that's not true.
He also says Karr has been sending a number of emails in recent months, to University of Colorado journalism professor, Michael Tracey, in which he made statements about JonBenet's death. The professor passed the emails along to police.
Tracey says, "One of the reasons they [investigators] might have been skeptical is, they get a lot of stories about 'wing-nuts.'" But Tracey says he has no idea if Karr is a "wing-nut".
Wood says those emails were another key development in linking Karr to the murder, adding, "There is information about the murder that has never been publicly disclosed.''
JonBenet's aunt, Pamela Paugh, says the arrest is "a long time in coming," and came as "quite a shock."
Former Boulder deputy district attorney, Trip DeMuth, was also caught off-guard by the arrest - even though he knew the investigation was under way. DeMuth figured it would end like past investigations that never panned-out.
DeMuth and Paugh agree, investigators were too focused on JonBenet's parents and brother as suspects. The ex-prosecutor says some had "blinders on" that kept them from following the evidence.
District Attorney Mary Lacy stressed that suspect John Karr is presumed innocent. She then said the same thing when asked if JonBenet's father is still considered a suspect.
Lacy was also asked if she's worried that Karr may be making a false confession. To that she said she "can't comment on the evidence." She does say, Karr traveled extensively since leaving the US, and it took months to identify, locate and arrest him.
Members of the Ramsey family continue to mourn at the graves of JonBenet and her mother, with new hope that justice will prevail.
