Widespread, Damaging, Unusual December Storm Will Also Spawn Derecho, Tornadoes in the Plains, Midwest (WEATHER.COM)
A massive storm is triggering an unusual threat of a derecho and tornadoes for mid-December in the upper Midwest as it blasts much of the Plains and Rockies with widespread damaging winds and even blowing dust.
This powerful storm has already produced damaging winds Wednesday from Colorado and New Mexico into the Plains.
Wind gusts over 100 mph have been measured near Colorado Springs and at Taos Ski Area in northern New Mexico. A peak gust of 107 mph was clocked near Lamar, Colorado earlier Wednesday.
Compounding that, a line of severe thunderstorms is also bringing a threat of destructive winds and tornadoes.

Tornado and severe thunderstorm watches are posted into the evening, shown in red and yellow in the map below.
A squall line of severe thunderstorms is now racing through the Missouri Valley with damaging winds and embedded tornadoes. Some tornadoes have already been confirmed earlier Wednesday by spotters and emergency managers in central Nebraska.
